A Very Constipated Sherilyn

Since birth, Sherilyn has been a very constipated baby. When she was a newborn baby, she would only poo poo once in every 3 - 8 days and when she did her poopie business, it would last between 15 - 30 minutes! Last year, I found out that her constipation was due to the Choline in the formula milk that she drinks (Enfagrow A+). Now she's on Dutch Lady 123 (day time) and Enfagrow A+ with fibre (night time). For a long time, the constipation was kept at bay until recently. She has been suffering from constipation for the last 2 weeks. This could be due to the fact that she's not eating enough and thus, does not have enough bulk to form the stools. Her eating habits have become from bad to worse lately. Whenever we eat rice with dishes, she would pout her lips and give me a 'foo kwa meen' (a face as bitter looking as bitter gourd). My maid and I have to take turns to coax, bribe and threaten her to eat... for almost 1.5-2 hours every meal. When it comes to bread, cookies, crackers, cakes and fish balls, her face would light up and she will have no problems chomping down her food.... bribe-free, cane-free and threat-free. But I can't be feeding her with these everyday, twice a day, can I?

Today is the 3rd day she has not been doing her poopie business. This morning, I made her sit on her throne for almost 2 hours yet it was a fruitless effort. After her nap this afternoon, I made her sit on the toilet for almost 1 hour and voila, the poop finally made its appearance, albeit with much pain and blood. She drinks a lot of water and milk but without sufficient solid food, there is no bulk and thus, suffers from constipation. Do you have a child who's like Sherilyn too?

oh poor Sher :( i'm always very paranoid when it comes to ashley's poopie business. she's also quite constipated. She was taking Enfagrow and her stools were hard. Now I've switched her to Dumex and she's better. I feed her papaya very often, lots of prunes and other fruits. Sometimes she would poo every day and sometimes once every 2 days. Does Sher eat fruits every day?

Barb... yup, I feed Sher fruits everyday.... red dragon fruit, plums, freshly squeezed orange juice (everyday), papaya, etc. I guess some kids are just born constipated and some kids poo poo very easily, just like Alycia who has no probs doing her big biz everyday.

too much bread can also cause it, especially white. i take it as you are giving her wholemeal as u are HFM? :P if nothing else works, have you tried prune juice, or hiding mixed veggies in soup or patties?

poo till got blood? poor thing. maybe that's why she's not willing to go poo, becoz it hurts. i hope it's just a bruise that caused it yea?

Sweetpea... you're right, I only feed her wholemeal bread, but occasionally white Gardenia bread (which I buy for my maid) when she sees kakak eating white bread and wants to eat too. I feed her prune juice EVERY day without fail and she eats vege too. I think it's becoz she doesn't eat enough. I'm like that too... when I don't eat enough, I will have a hard time pooing too.

My elder daughter has this problem when she was 1-3 years old.But now she has no problem with this already.try to give her porridge for few days and see whether she is improving because sometimes little kid need to eat soft meat and make sure the meat she eat is cut into small bite.Prune juice only help abit but not always.Ask her to drink a glass of water every morning.yup!vege soup can help too.:)hope she is doing fine now.

HI Shireen, like I have mentioned to you that Sean also a picky eater, he also pood alternate days or sometimes 3 days once. He drinks plenty of fluid but I guess Milk also play an important role. I also changed from Enfa to Dutch Lady due to this problem.

A lot of friends recommended Nestle with Bifidus. Good for their tummy and digestion too. Why not give a try?

Cheese & bread are some of the culprit. When I stopped feeding Sean cheese, his poo poo habit back to normal.

And also "Yoghurt" one of the helper too. After a can of yoghurt, he will poo within few hours.

Hope this helps!

My son Fearles also got this problem. When he was still a baby, more worst..sometime only poo in 3-4 days once! Till got one time i have to bring him to see paed and get some "medicine" to insert to his "butt" in order to get him poo. From there i try to give him two days once papaya, or once he is constipated i give him papaya, yoghurt, kiwi. Now, he is getting better, but sometime still 2 or 3 days poo poo once. :(

perhaps u can add some lactulose to her milk or juice. my older son had terrible constipation and the PD said to use this. its just actually a sugar solution that sits in the intestines and absorbs water so that the bowel has enough water to be soft and passed out. it works and is totally safe. just give about 5 ml a day and u should start seeing some results imeediately.
