This Week In Photos ~ Food, Family & Pet Cat

With 6 papers done and dusted, the SPM girl has 3 more papers to conquer.  Nine more days to go and she'll be free!

After her SPM exam, Sherilyn will resume dancing, cook for us again and work part-time at Front Room  Cafe again.  She previously worked at the cafe for about half a year before taking half a year's break to focus on her SPM exam.

We will only discuss the course to pursue in college and university after Sherilyn's SPM results are out.  Colleges and universities have been sending letters to offer her courses to pursue.  Last month she received a letter from a college that provides training to students aiming to be cabin crew and pilots, inviting her to attend an interview.

Yesterday Sherilyn received a letter from Unikop, which offered her a list of 'interesting' courses to pursue.  Unikop is a college owned by the Royal Malaysian Police Cooperation. Some of the 'interesting' courses are Diploma in Police and Investigation, Investigation Services, Corporate Investigation, Law Enforcement, Psychology, Pharmacy, Cyber Security, and many more.

Letter from Unikop

I thought that these courses are not what Sherilyn would like to pursue but to my surprise, she told me that she doesn't mind pursuing courses in forensics, crime investigation and even being a detective or CID in future πŸ˜‚πŸ˜†

While I know that this daughter of mine is a dare-devil and tough inside out, I would not want her to be in this field that is more apt for the opposite sex. We had a good laugh over this and were talking about how her life would be if she were a cop or detective and investigating cases like Abby Choi's gruesome murder πŸ˜†

I took Sherilyn and Cass out for brunch on Thursday as the SPM girl didn't have any paper to sit for on that day and also the next day.  We went to The Lion of Punjab, a restaurant in our hood that serves delicious North Indian cuisine. Our family loves Indian food.

We ordered the Thali sets, which are value meal sets at only RM10 for a meat-free set lunch and RM15 for a set lunch with chicken.

Sherilyn and Cass each ordered the set lunch with chicken curry.  It comes with three different types of lip-smacking curry, two pieces of Tandoori Roti, a bowl of rice, and a sweet wheat dessert (Halwa).

This is my vegetarian set.

The food was superb, though they were only budget meals.  The curries were thick, creamy, and full of aromatic herbs, spices, and ingredients.  The Tandoori roti was simple and delish. We were even served long-grain Basmathi rice, which is costlier than regular rice.  All the spicy food was washed down with a hot cup of aromatic Masala Chai tea. We will definitely be back for another round of set lunch before school starts again for Cass in two weeks.

The vegetarian set.

And non-vegetarian set.

I'm going to try their different types of stuffed Naan bread next week and will get the food delivered to our condo as the restaurant is offering free delivery to those staying in the hood.

Our sweet girl Haru's new favorite spot. She loves to sit here so that she can look down to see the world below her.

Haru knows that grandma is not around (currently in Penang and Ipoh) and has been more daring around the house - she climbs up the kitchen island to inspect the toaster oven, jumps up the kitchen counters to sniff our food, jumps up our beds, and feels so at home when her grandma is not around to scold her when she's naughty 😸

Chinese New Year 2022 ¬ Day 6

We wanted to eat something that's not Chinese after almost a week of having CNY dishes twice a day.  So we went to Money's Corner Food Court in Brickfields where there's a good choice of delicious hawkers fare ranging from Indian to Vietnamese, Western to popular street food, such as Char Koay Teow, Chee Cheong Fun, pork noodles and more.

Peter's pork noodles is one of the best pork noodles in KL.  Generous with pork and pork lard, the bowl of noodles in rich pork soup is a must-have at Money's Corner for fans of pork.

Our other favorite at this food court - Moorthy's Mathai Nasi Briyani with a good choice of delicious Indian dishes for you to pick.

Our third favorite - beef pho and Viet food. This stall is run by a former chef of a popular Vietnamese restaurant at Mid Valley Megamall.  He and his wife are Vietnamese.

In the evening, a lion dance performance was held at the pool side of our condo.  Some rich neighbors hired the lion dance troupe to perform a spectacular dance on stilts.

Poor Haru was super duper terrified of the banging and thumping of the drums and cymbals. She hid behind my computer desk for hours and refused to come out even after the thunderous sounds of the drums stopped when the show ended.

Two days later on Pai Ti Kong day (Hokkien New Year), our scaredy cat was again scared shit of the thunderous sounds of fire works which lasted for almost an hour.  We had already put her back into her cage but she was so terrified of the blasting sounds that she squeezed herself out of the tiny gap under her cage!!  Sherilyn had to cuddle her tightly for the entire hour from 12 - 1am and slept on the couch that night to accompany her manja meow!

Papa's 75th Birthday ~ 19 August 2018

On the morning of papa's birthday, despite having had a very heavy and sumptuous dinner the previous night, the hubs brought us all to dig into yet another very heavy meal for brunch. He chose Indian food as papa is a huge fan of spicy food. According to mum, papa eats curry almost every day.

It was our very first time trying out Vishal Food & Catering Restaurant @ Brickfields. The restaurant was bursting at its door with patrons when we stepped inside on a Sunday morning.  Thankfully we managed to get a table pretty quickly. And thank God it wasn't a hot and humid day and the heat inside the restaurant was bearable for me. But papa and Roy were sweating buckets after scarfing down hot and spicy food.

As a Chettinad restaurant, Vishal specialises in the spicy and aromatic cuisine that hails from Tamil Nadu. Heady curries are heaped onto rice (choose from biryani or white rice) on individual banana leaves. Scoop up the rasam, warm rice and dhal into your mouth and that will guarantee your place in the queue that snakes around this joint every Sunday.

Once we were seated in a "mess-hall" setting, huge pieces of banana leaves were laid on our table.  The girls were excited that they were going to eat from fresh banana leaves. Then  a staff came by our table to serve us the accompaniments for the rotis and rice. His tray was loaded with individual plates of the usual favourites of varuval chicken, mutton, bean curd, egg, fish curry, etc. that you can add on to your meal if you wish.  We were also given a 3-in1 tray filled with curry, dhall and chutney where we can help ourselves to for our rotis.

The hubs ordered a plate of mutton nasi briyani and the portion of the rice was really huge! So was the piece of mutton bone!  It was so good that he ordered another plate for us to share so that we could all leave his plate of rice and mutton alone πŸ˜†

All mine and keep your hands off my mutton rice!

I love the vegetarian accompaniments for my tosai:

Feel free to help yourself to these mouth-watering accompaniments for your rotis and nasi.
Vishal Food & Catering, Brickfields, KL-5

We enjoyed our Indian cuisine very much and were really stuffed to the max.  But the hubs suggested having cakes and coffee next! Very typical of him.

After brunch, we walked to the Indian stalls located opposite Vishal to have a look-see.  The hubs was intrigued by the beautiful garlands sold at the roadside flower stalls. He suggested getting a garland for papa, the birthday boy. What a brilliant idea! What other way to make my simple papa happy than to gift him with a garland on his birthday.

Next, the hubs took us on a short city tour of KL around the vicinity of Little India Brickfields, Central Market, Petaling Street, Bangsar and Jalan Parlimen. Having lived in KL for 27 years, I've hardly had the time to visit all the touristy places in and around the Klang Valley. KL indeed has many beautiful and interesting places to visit. But to the hubs and me, living in KL has always been a mad rush from one place to another and being caught in perpetual horrendous traffic jams.

No prize for guessing who put the flower behind the hubs' ear eh?  πŸ˜†

Our next stop was at Naj & Belle @ Bangsar for cakes, coffee and juices and another surprise for papa. This will be told in another post πŸ˜‰

Little Friday Jaunt

This morning while our girls were in school, I had a little jaunt in KL with the hubs and the mil in search of street food and food supplies for the hubs' catering events.

First stop was at Unifrozen @ Jalan Chan Sow Lin for the hubs to get his catering paraphernalia. Then we went to tuck into our favorite Ipoh style 'kai si hor fun' (flat rice noodles with shredded chicken) and bean sprouts at San Peng. It's one of the best 'kai si hor fun' and bean sprouts we could find in KL and comes really close to the real deal in our beloved hometown of Ipoh.

After chomping down a bowl of noodles, my foodie hubs said he wanted to eat Indian rice, which is supposedly one of the best in KL.  Oh. my. gawd!  I was SO full already.

He brought us to the famous SS Spicy Restoran at Kg Attap to tuck into some Indian rice.  It was my first time there.

Upon entering the little stall under a tree, the smell of fried chicken and Indian curry wafted in the air. Oh. my. gawd. Though I was full to my throat, I was drowning in the aroma of Indian food, which is one of my favorite cuisines.  Hubs was beaming with excitement. He is happiest when surrounded with food.  He quickly got a plate and began to help himself to the scrumptious dishes.

SS Spicy is located beneath a huge tree in Jalan Kampung Attap and has survived for more than 20 years with no real identity, except for their tasty food that has customers coming back for more. Going by the many names their customers have concocted including “Bawah Pokok”, “SSSC food stall”, “Sivam corner” and “Suresh Corner”, this little stall has its roots firmly planted in the area. Serving the best of Indian cuisine, the stall serves customers from all walks of life, regardless of race and religion.

This dry style chicken varuval dish caught my eyes and I told the hubs to scoop out a few pieces for us to try...

After waiting for 15-20 minutes, the super crispy deep fried chicken (kampung chicken drumsticks) arrived, right out from the hot pot of oil and sizzling hot. I dared not lay my hands on the chicken, lest I get a badly inflamed throat right away.  By the time we finished the plate of rice with dishes (one plate shared by 3 of us), we could not stuff the fried chicken down our throats anymore. We doggy bagged the chicken home for dinner.

By the way, the fried kampung chicken drumstick costs RM8 each!   Total bill came out to RM41.50 for the 3 of us (only 1 plate of rice with a few small portions of dishes) and 3 pieces of fried chicken.

The plate of rice that we shared.. I had forgotten to snap a picture and only remembered half way through eating... The deep fried fish was sinfully delish too.

After tucking into 2 heavy meals, we went to Lee's Frozen where hubs bought his supply of frozen meat, et al.

We reached home just in time to receive Drama Queen and Cass who got back from school.

I truly enjoy little jaunts like this when the kids are in school 😁

Breakfast With The Big Girl

School was out for several days for the big princess to cater for students sitting for the UEC exam early this week.

Every morning during her school break, the big princess and I would have a short outing, either to the supermarket or to the eatery to enjoy breakfast, just the two of us.

Here we had breakfast at the Indian restaurant. She had her favorite roti tisu kurang gula (less sugar) and I had my all-time favorite tosai rawa lebih garing (extra crispy).  We enjoyed our high calorie and high carb breakfast very much and needless to say, we busted our carbs and calorie quota for the day. Lunch was just fruits and cucumber :D

I really wouldn't mind a wee bit tucking into this heavenly morsel everyday IF ONLY there was no such thing as carb, diabetes, calories and high cholesterol. IF only la...

Thursday Lunch - 12 May 2016

I had a pretty heavy brunch loaded with calories, cholesterol and carbs on Thursday.

While our girls were in school, hubs, the mil and I tucked into some gravely sinful and toothsome Indian morsel! :D

The hubs ordered nasi briyani with added mutton curry, veggies and fish curry.  The plate of nasi briyani was humongous and cost a whopping RM12 for the rice, mutton and veggie.  The three of us shared this plate of rice.  I further added a tosai rawa, which is my absolute favorite.  Tosai rawa is a healthier alternative to roti canai.  It is light and not starchy and heavy unlike its counterpart.  I like the cumin seeds, mustard seeds, onions, carrots, curry leaves and coriander leaves thrown into the batter, which make the tosai bursting with  natural flavors.  The tosai rawa is served with healthy dippings of coconut chutney, onion chutney and dhal.

I also bought a pack of nasi briyani with hard boiled egg and chicken for Cass and Sherilyn to share for lunch.

For lunch, I had something really light and easy on my tummy.  I had salad composed of one raw green capsicum, pineapple, hard boiled egg, cucumber and pumpkin seeds.

I can never get sick of Indian cuisine.  Our girls love it too. They are fans of spicy food.  However, I will only have it for lunch or breakfast and then go meatless and vegetarian for the rest of the day. It's all about having a balanced diet and not busting your calorie, carbs and fat quota / intake for each day. This way, you can eat anything and everything your heart desires :)

Gorging On Fattening Snacks

Each time I see a street vendor selling vada or vadai at the pasar malam or at Indian eateries, I will surely indulge in them. I like both the varieties of vada – the ones with lots of dhall beans and the flour ones shaped like a doughnut. I got these from Raju’s last Sunday and bought 4 – gobbled down 3 and gave 1 to my maid. Also bought a packet of muruku and a packet of Indian fried crisps. Sigh, I hope I don’t need weight loss pills to help me burn the excess fat I gained from gorging on so much oily food and food high in carbs.

We All Love Indian Cuisine

Last week when my mum was here, we decided to have Indian food for lunch. So we bought these :

Roti canai tisu, which Alycia and Sherilyn called it cone shaped party hat! They loved the 'edible party hat' so much that they chomped down almost the whole thing themselves. Some Indian restaurants also make tosei tisu and it tastes just as good, especially when it is hot from the pan and crispy.

Tosei, roti pisang and roti canai.

We also bought some chicken kurma which was not very spicy

and Alycia loved it so much that she drank the kurma gravy by the spoonfuls. Luckily she did not have a tummy ache after lunch. Even Sherilyn loved the roti canai and chicken kurma gravy.

It's all in the genes - daddy, mummy, koong koong, granny and mah mah all love Indian food, so does Alycia.

North Indian Cuisine

Last Saturday, DH brought us for an unplanned lunch at Saffron Restaurant, a restaurant that specializes in North Indian cuisine located at Sri Hartamas. The food are all home-cooked, using loads of spices and are very tasty, even my fussy food critic hubby enjoyed the food. Here's what we ate :

Fish Kofta - fish with potato patties

Butter chicken - boneless chicken braised in creamy almond and butter sauce. Very tasty and rich.

Bhoona Gosht - mutton braised in a highly spiced gravy of tomatoes, onions and herbs. The mutton was tender and the gravy was very flavourful.

Saffron rice

Pumpkin Rai - cubes of pumpkin flavored with ginger and mustard seed.

Paratha bread - layered wholewheat flat bread - everyone's favorite. Tastes like sweet roti canai

Thick dhall with lots of herbs and chick peas.

Chapati

We had a dessert of home-made almond ice-cream and durian ice-cream but I find the ice-cream a tad too sweet for me.

Overall, the food was good and the bill came up to RM103.
