Melting in KL

The weather in KL has been absolutely brutal for the past month — and I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve been showering 4 to 5 times a day just to stay sane and comfortable. And not warm showers, mind you — cold showers. Though honestly, even the cold water feels warm these days!

At night, we don’t even need a blanket in our air-conditioned rooms. It’s that hot. Even Haru, our poor cat, is feeling the heat. This clever girl now sleeps flat on the floor right in front of the stand fan, abandoning her bed entirely because she knows the floor is cooler.

Running errands in the morning feels like stepping into an oven, and I come home drenched in sweat, immediately tossing everything — underwear included! — into the laundry basket before hitting the shower again.

According to the weatherman, some states (KL & Selangor included) are under Level 1 Heatwave alert, and the heat is here to stay… until September. Apparently, July to September will be even hotter. Oh God — help us all. 🥵

A Level 1 warning is issued when temperatures at a location are between 35 deg C and 37 deg C for three consecutive days.

How are you all coping with this heat?

Scratches, Supercars, and Spooky Coincidences — Our Unlucky Encounters with Luxury Cars

This evening, my hubby and I went on a simple grocery run to our neighborhood supermarket to restock our essentials — mainly yogurt and eggs. It was supposed to be just another routine outing, but something unexpected happened on the way there.

As we were driving along the narrow road leading to the supermarket, a bright yellow Ferrari was double-parked at the side. Just as we were passing by, the right-side door of the Ferrari suddenly swung open — and grazed the left side of my hubby’s car. The timing was so sudden, neither side had a chance to react.

Hubby quickly pulled over to check for any damage. He then walked over to the two men standing near the Ferrari to talk to them. At that moment, I felt a wave of worry wash over me. One of the men was wearing a body-hugging singlet with the word Muay Thai emblazoned across his chest — and to be honest, he gave off serious “tai kor” (gangster big brother) vibes. I couldn’t help but feel tense, fearing the situation might escalate, even though the accident clearly wasn’t our fault.

But to my relief, everything was civil. The man in the Muay Thai singlet gave hubby his handphone number, and there was no confrontation whatsoever. Upon inspection, the damage was minimal — just a faint scratch on the plastic cap above the tire. No dents, no drama. Still, it left us shaken for a bit.

Strangely, this is the second minor accident involving hubby’s new car — and it’s only three months old! About two months ago, the boom gate barrier at our condo malfunctioned and came down unexpectedly, hitting the top of his car and leaving a shallow dent near the bonnet.

Even stranger? We seem to have a history with mishaps involving luxury cars. A few years back, on Sherilyn’s birthday of all days, she opened my car door without checking her surroundings. Bad luck struck — a BMW’s side mirror was cleanly yanked off when it passed by. The damage? A hefty RM500 to replace just the mirror! That incident left a lasting dent on hubby’s wallet and a permanent cautionary tale for all of us.

While these accidents were minor, they were still frustrating. A new car always holds that special glow, and it’s disheartening to see it marked so soon. But all things considered, we’re grateful that both incidents were harmless in the bigger picture — no injuries, no real conflict, and repairable surface-level damages.

If there’s one lesson here, it’s that bad luck doesn’t care whether you drive a Ferrari, BMW, or a humble family car. But we’re just hoping our streak of unfortunate encounters ends here. Enough dents, dings, and scrapes for a long, long time, please!

Here's to smoother drives ahead and zero run-ins with flashy vehicles. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻.

A Sweet Gesture at the Candy Shop: Kindness is Still Alive

Last Sunday, after her figure skating class, Cass—who often spends almost the entire day at the skating rink training diligently—helped me with our weekly grocery run. It's something I’ve asked her to help with since last year, as the supermarket at the mall where the rink is often has good deals on blueberries and pre-washed salad, both of which are staples in our fridge.

As she made her way to the supermarket in the mall, something colourful caught her attention—the newly opened Sticky candy shop. She popped in for a quick peek and decided to treat herself. I had given her an extra RM3 for the groceries, and she used part of it to buy just two pieces of gummies. Yes, only two pieces—costing RM1.40 in total, as they were sold by weight.

What happened next was a little moment of sweetness—not just from the candy, but from a stranger’s heart. The shop assistant, seeing this teenage girl carefully pick out only two pieces, must have been moved by her thoughtfulness and restraint. Instead of letting her leave with just those, the kind assistant gifted Cass a generous handful of all the sample Sticky candies they had.

When Cass came home and told me the story, I couldn’t help but smile and feel genuinely grateful. In that brief encounter, a stranger showed that kindness and empathy still exist in the most unexpected places. The simple act of giving a few candies—without expecting anything in return—brightened Cass’s day and mine.

These small moments are reminders that humanity is not lost. That in a busy world where people often rush past one another, there are still those who pause to show compassion, even in the smallest ways. A kind gesture from a shop assistant at a candy store may not make headlines, but to us, it meant a lot.

So to that thoughtful shop assistant at Sticky, thank you. You didn’t just give out candies—you gave us a story of kindness to carry with us. Bless your heart for making a teenager’s Sunday that much sweeter 😊

The packet of free sample sticky rock candy that was gifted to Cass. This is the remainder of what she had already eaten. It was quite a big packet.

When Your Fridge Starts "Crying" — Time to Say Goodbye?

For almost half a year, our trusted Sharp fridge has been acting up. Water droplets started forming on the ceiling of the top shelf, so much so that all our food containers placed there were constantly wet. It became a daily frustration to wipe down the shelf and dry off the containers. I finally had the time to call in a fridge technician, hoping to solve the problem once and for all.

The first technician diagnosed the issue as a loose gasket (rubber seal on the doors) and replaced it. While that initially seemed promising—no more water droplets—the fridge suddenly stopped cooling properly on the same day. Our food was no longer staying cold, which led to an even bigger headache. We had to discard a lot of food from our fridge and freezer. What followed was a long-drawn drama involving five visits from two different technicians, and replacing a faulty defrost sensor in the freezer. Despite all the tinkering and replacement parts, our fridge still isn’t performing at 100%.  The repairs set us back RM800.

The second technician kindly left us a thermometer to monitor the internal temperature. Apparently, the ideal fridge temperature should be around 4°C. After the fifth repair attempt, the temperature started to drop again, but it’s still inconsistent. During the day, with frequent door openings, the fridge struggles to stay at the optimal temperature. At night, when left undisturbed, it managed to hit the sweet spot of 4°C—just once. And now, the dreaded water droplets are making a comeback on the top shelf ceiling. It’s like a bad cycle we can’t seem to break.

Our fridge will turn 17 this November. That’s a pretty long life by modern standards, I suppose. Electrical appliances nowadays don’t seem to last the way they used to. I remember our old fridge and washing machine at my parents’ house easily lasted over 20 years with barely any issues. Back then, manufacturers took pride in making things durable. Now, it feels like planned obsolescence is the name of the game—if things don’t break, how will they keep selling?

I think it’s finally time to say goodbye to our hardworking fridge and start scouting for a new one. Hopefully, this new investment will last at least one and a half decades.

How old is your fridge? Is it still running well, or is it starting to "cry" like ours?

On 3rd May, our fridge temperature had been hovering above 15 degrees Celsius. All our dairy produce and perishables had to be transferred to the other fridge in the wet kitchen. That fridge has been stuffed full to the brim ever since. Hope it won't conk out too!

Best Gemstones for Earrings to Pair with a Pink Dress

When it comes to fashion, few combinations are as graceful and romantic as a well-paired gemstone earring with a pink dress. Whether you're attending a wedding, a cocktail party, or simply going out for a sophisticated dinner, your earrings play a vital role in completing your look. Pink dresses can range from blush to hot pink, and the gemstone you choose should enhance both the tone of the dress and your personal style.

This guide explores the best gemstones for earrings that pair beautifully with pink dresses, considering factors like color harmony, contrast, occasion, skin tone, and personal flair. From classic diamonds to the playful glow of opals, let’s dive into the top choices that elevate your pink-dress ensemble from pretty to perfect.

Why Choosing the Right Gemstone Matters

Before we get into the list, it’s important to understand why the choice of gemstone makes such a difference. Earrings are close to your face—they draw attention to your eyes, hair, and skin. When you're wearing a pink dress, the right gemstone can:

  • Enhance or complement the tone of your outfit

  • Balance your skin undertone

  • Make your look cohesive or add intentional contrast

  • Set the mood (e.g., soft and romantic or bold and dramatic)

Pink is a color of softness, femininity, and charm—but depending on the shade, it can also be powerful and edgy. A dusty rose dress calls for different accessories than a neon fuchsia one. Now, let’s discover which gemstones best suit this versatile color.

1. Diamond – Timeless Elegance That Works Every Time

There’s a reason diamonds are a girl's best friend—they go with absolutely everything. Pink and diamond is a match made in heaven. The clarity and sparkle of diamonds accentuate the softness of pink while adding a hint of sophistication.

Why They Work:

  • Diamonds reflect light and bring glow to the face.

  • Perfect for formal events or bridal wear.

  • Ideal for both pale and vibrant pinks.

Best Styles:

  • Solitaire diamond studs for minimalism.

  • Diamond halos with pink sapphires for more glam.

  • Chandelier diamond earrings for black-tie occasions.

Diamonds are especially effective if your pink dress has embellishments or is made of silky fabric—both shimmer beautifully under diamonds’ sparkle.

2. Pink Sapphire – Harmonizing with a Twist

For a more coordinated look, pink sapphire earrings echo the hue of your dress without getting lost in it. Sapphires come in varying shades of pink—from pale peach to hot magenta—so you can match or complement your specific shade of dress with ease.

Why They Work:

  • Enhance pink tones with a deeper or contrasting variation.

  • Symbolize love, loyalty, and elegance.

  • Offer a modern yet romantic touch.

Best Styles:

  • Pink sapphire drops with gold settings for soft pink gowns.

  • Deep pink studs for dusty rose or neutral-pink outfits.

  • Mixed pink sapphire and diamond hoops for fun, youthful looks.

Pink sapphires work especially well with pastel or muted pinks, where they add just the right touch of depth and complexity.

3. Morganite – The Romantic Dream

Morganite is a peachy-pink gemstone that oozes femininity and elegance. Its subtle shimmer and soft hue make it a dreamy match for any pink dress, especially blush tones and champagne-pink shades.

Why They Work:

  • They blend beautifully without being overly matchy.

  • Ideal for vintage or bohemian looks.

  • Often paired with rose gold, which complements pink garments.

Best Styles:

  • Teardrop morganite earrings with halo diamonds.

  • Morganite studs in rose gold for casual or semi-formal wear.

  • Boho-inspired morganite danglers for outdoor weddings.

Morganite gives you a warm, glowy look and works across a wide range of pink dress shades—from barely-there baby pink to deep rosewood.

4. Pearls – Classic and Understated

Pearls and pink dresses? Absolutely. Whether you’re channeling Audrey Hepburn or creating a soft, beachy look, pearls are eternally elegant. Their soft luster contrasts beautifully with pink hues.

Why They Work:

  • Add purity and softness to the overall ensemble.

  • Perfect for both casual and formal settings.

  • Work well with light pinks, rose, and coral tones.

Best Styles:

  • Simple pearl studs for clean elegance.

  • Pearl drop earrings with gold or diamond accents.

  • Baroque pearls for a more contemporary twist.

White, cream, or blush pearls all look fantastic, and freshwater pearls add texture and personality to more minimal pink outfits.

5. Rose Quartz – Feminine and Flirty

If you're aiming for a soft, romantic, and delicate vibe, rose quartz is a top pick. This pale pink gemstone adds a tender and youthful element to your ensemble.

Why They Work:

  • Harmonize naturally with pink fabric tones.

  • Great for daytime events and spring/summer looks.

  • Offer a soft, loving energy often associated with self-love.

Best Styles:

  • Polished rose quartz studs for soft pink sundresses.

  • Long rose quartz earrings with rose gold for boho dresses.

  • Geometric rose quartz and gold statement pieces for fashion-forward looks.

Rose quartz is more affordable than many gemstones and is ideal for semi-casual or artistic outfits.

6. Amethyst – A Bold Contrast for Bright Pinks

Pairing your pink dress with amethyst earrings creates a stunning color contrast. The violet tones of amethyst make it ideal for hot pink or fuchsia dresses, providing an edgy and artistic flair.

Why They Work:

  • Offer a sophisticated yet unexpected contrast.

  • Work well with cool undertones in pink dresses.

  • Ideal for evening looks and cocktail attire.

Best Styles:

  • Amethyst studs in silver or white gold settings.

  • Mixed gemstone earrings (amethyst and diamonds) for sparkle and pop.

  • Long purple crystal chandeliers for an artistic fashion statement.

Amethyst is especially bold when your pink dress is vivid or patterned and you want a color-blocked or standout accessory.

7. Opal – Playful Iridescence for Day or Night

Opals are known for their magical iridescence, often shifting between pink, blue, green, and gold. This means they can subtly reflect the tones in your pink dress, no matter the hue.

Why They Work:

  • Their milky base pairs well with blush and nude pinks.

  • Iridescent reflections add personality and uniqueness.

  • Ideal for whimsical, creative, or artistic looks.

Best Styles:

  • White opal studs for minimal elegance.

  • Opal drops with diamond or moonstone accents.

  • Fire opals (more orange-pink) for deeper pink dresses.

Opals are ideal for pink dresses made of tulle, chiffon, or other dreamy fabrics, giving you an ethereal and artistic vibe.

8. Ruby – Passion and Drama for Bold Pinks

If you're wearing a deep rose, hot pink, or magenta dress, ruby earrings can help you turn heads. Rich and intense, rubies create an elegant yet passionate statement when paired with darker or jewel-toned pinks.

Why They Work:

  • Contrast with light pinks and intensify dark pinks.

  • Evoke energy, confidence, and bold femininity.

  • Work well for evening or formal events.

Best Styles:

  • Ruby studs in gold for timeless glamour.

  • Dangling rubies with diamonds for red carpet-level drama.

  • Clustered ruby and gemstone floral designs for a romantic punch.

Rubies bring depth and intensity to your look and are best worn when you're aiming for a confident and striking outfit.

9. Tanzanite – Cool-Toned Sophistication

For cooler-toned pinks like rose or bubblegum, tanzanite earrings offer a chic and unexpected pairing. This blue-violet gem is rare, luxurious, and instantly elevates your look.

Why They Work:

  • Complement cool pinks without clashing.

  • Ideal for winter weddings or formal occasions.

  • Pair well with silver, platinum, or white gold.

Best Styles:

  • Simple tanzanite and diamond studs.

  • Long tanzanite teardrops for evening gowns.

  • Geometric tanzanite shapes for modern flair.

Tanzanite brings mystery and depth to your outfit and offers a nice departure from the more traditional color pairings.

10. Citrine – A Golden Pop for Warm Pinks

Want to add a sunny twist to your pink outfit? Citrine is a golden-yellow gemstone that brings warmth, joy, and a touch of modern glamour. It works particularly well with coral-pinks or salmon-toned dresses.

Why They Work:

  • Add radiant contrast without overwhelming the look.

  • Bright and cheerful—perfect for daytime events.

  • Offer a playful energy that suits modern or boho aesthetics.

Best Styles:

  • Minimal citrine studs with gold backing.

  • Mixed citrine and garnet earrings for fall color vibes.

  • Statement citrine danglers with pink enamel details.

Citrine works best when you want your earrings to pop and you're not afraid to experiment with color combinations.

How to Choose the Right Gemstone Based on Dress Shade

Not all pinks are created equal, and the shade of your dress can influence the best gemstone choice. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Light Blush Pink: Morganite, Rose Quartz, Pearls, Diamonds

  • Soft Dusty Pink: Pink Sapphire, Pearls, Rose Quartz, Amethyst

  • Hot Pink / Fuchsia: Amethyst, Ruby, Tanzanite, Diamonds

  • Coral Pink / Salmon: Citrine, Morganite, Opal, Rose Quartz

  • Magenta / Deep Rose: Ruby, Pink Sapphire, Tanzanite, Diamond

Always consider your skin undertone too—cool undertones benefit from gems like amethyst and tanzanite, while warm undertones shine with morganite, citrine, or rose gold settings.

Final Tips for Pairing Earrings with a Pink Dress

  • Consider the neckline: For high necklines, opt for studs or short drops; for off-shoulder or V-neck, go bolder with chandeliers or statement pieces.

  • Metal color matters: Silver, platinum, or white gold enhances cool pinks; yellow or rose gold works best with warm pinks.

  • Match the mood: Romantic date? Try rose quartz. Corporate gala? Diamonds or pink sapphires. Beach wedding? Pearls or opals.

Conclusion

Pink dresses are as versatile as they are stunning, and the right gemstone earrings can elevate your look from lovely to unforgettable. Whether you prefer the sparkle of diamonds, the romance of morganite, or the drama of ruby, there’s a perfect gemstone for every shade and style of pink. Use this guide to match your earrings with your pink dress not just by color, but by energy, mood, and occasion. You'll walk into any room radiating confidence, harmony, and beauty.

My Morning Ritual: Nourishing the Day with Healthy, Colorful Beverages

Mornings are sacred to me, and not just because they mark the start of a new day. I genuinely look forward to my morning ritual of sipping on a healthy, comforting beverage while taking my daily supplements. There’s something deeply satisfying about fueling my body with nourishing ingredients first thing in the morning—it sets the tone for a mindful, health-focused day ahead.

One of my all-time favorite morning drinks is made with Chinese almond powder. I’ve always loved its unique sweet, and slightly pungent taste. It reminds me of traditional Chinese desserts, but without the guilt. I use the unsweetened version, of course, and I mix it with ground flaxseeds and unsweetened cocoa powder. This has been my staple mid-morning drink for quite a while.

Lately, I’ve been experimenting and expanding my morning beverage blend to include black sesame powder and dehydrated purple sweet potato powder. Both powders are completely natural, unsweetened, and free from additives. The black sesame powder brings a deep, nutty richness, while the purple sweet potato powder adds not only a gorgeous violet hue but also a gentle, earthy sweetness that pairs beautifully with the almond base.

My favorite combo now is a mix of Chinese almond powder, ground flaxseeds, black sesame powder, and purple sweet potato powder. It’s a wholesome, antioxidant-packed drink that’s both tasty and beautiful to look at. The vibrant purple color from the sweet potato powder makes it feel like a treat, and the flavor is delicate yet satisfying.

Interestingly, Sherilyn uses the same purple sweet potato powder to make a syrup for her cafe-style matcha drinks. It’s always fun to see how we all find different ways to enjoy the same ingredients!

I feel that having this variety of healthy morning beverages not only keeps my taste buds excited but also helps me stay on track with my health goals. Every ingredient I choose is carefully selected for its health benefits, and there's a quiet joy in knowing I’m doing something good for my body—even before the day has really begun.

So, what’s your favorite morning drink (besides coffee and tea)?

My wholesome almond + purple sweet potato beverage. Love the vibrant violet hue! This brand of almond powder that I bought from Lazada is one of the most aromatic, and it's sugar-free.

100% purple sweet potato powder, also purchased from Lazada.

The almond powder (RM25) only lasted 2 weeks. It's pretty expensive for a 200gm tub.

The Cost of Dreams — Paying for Our Daughters' Education

April is here again — the season that gives me mild heart palpitations: university fee payment time for Alycia and Sherilyn. It’s one of the three most dreaded times of the year, financially speaking. Sometimes, in just one night, almost RM40,000 disappears from my bank account when I make the payments to both their universities. It's a moment that feels like tearing off a huge Band-Aid — swift but painful!

But this April brings a small sigh of relief — it's Alycia's final semester of her final year. That means this will be the last payment to her university. What a milestone! Thankfully, she was awarded almost RM20,000 under the ACE Scholarship from Sunway University and was granted a PTPTN loan of RM30,000. These helped lessen the burden significantly. We’re beyond proud of how far she’s come.

Now on to Sherilyn — her Architecture Degree comes with the heftiest price tag, costing over RM160,000 in total. She’s just starting her journey and we’re still hoping her PTPTN loan will finally be approved after some submission errors caused a delay. Keeping our fingers crossed!

Next year, Cass will be starting college too — and with that comes another round of tuition fees, applications, and more funds flowing out. It’s daunting to think about, but we’re mentally prepared (and budgeting like crazy!). I am now encouraging her to apply to Universiti Malaya (Malaysia's top university and ranked #60 globally) via the Open Channel (SATU) as the fee is slightly cheaper than private universities.

Even though the numbers can be scary and the expenses seem endless, I try to remind myself that this is what parenting is all about — investing in our children's future. Giving them the education and opportunities they need to build a successful, fulfilling life is a responsibility we don’t take lightly.

No complaints. Just prayers, hopes, and trust that our girls will thrive, be happy, stay healthy, and eventually earn a comfortable income to live the life they dream of — and maybe, just maybe, treat us to a nice dinner one day down the road 😄

To all parents walking the same path — may we all find strength (and good budgeting skills) to see our kids through.

A Colorful, Mostly Veggie Dinner — Nourishing, Light & Easy on the Tummy

When it comes to mealtimes, I’ve learned that nothing makes me feel better than a plate full of fresh, colorful vegetables. Over the years, my eating habits have naturally shifted toward a mostly plant-based style — with lots of veggies, fruits, nuts, and plain yogurt — though I still enjoy my fair share of pork, chicken, and fish for balance.

I’m especially grateful that my three girls share the same love for veggies, especially raw ones. This has made healthy eating at home so much easier, and I always feel happy seeing them enjoy a plate of greens without fuss.

Tonight’s 'dinner' (eaten at 1pm) was another colorful and satisfying bowl:

🥒 Raw sliced cucumbers
🍅 Raw sliced tomatoes
🌶️ Radish kimchi (for that perfect spicy, tangy kick! And it's homemade by Sherilyn)
🥬 Blanched celery and snow peas
🍢 4 sticks of chicken satay

It was simple, nourishing, and absolutely delicious! I love meals like this — mostly vegetables with just a small portion of meat (less than one-third of the plate). It’s easy on digestion and leaves me feeling light, energized, and good about what I’ve put into my body.

As for breakfast and lunch (breakfast eaten at 630 am and lunch at 9 am), it was my usual lineup of wholesome favorites:

Decaf coffee with fresh milk
🍊 One orange & a juicy ruby red kiwi
🍋 A glass of freshly squeezed lemon juice
🥣 A warm almond milk drink with dehydrated purple sweet potato powder and ground flax seed
🥚 One half-boiled egg
🍞 Two slices of sprouted wheat bread
— One topped with black sesame paste, and the other paired with savory chicken serunding (Malay-style meat floss).

And later this afternoon, when Cass returns from school, I’ll have my light ‘supper’ at around 4pm — just some blanched Siew Pak Choy and a handful of homemade granola with nuts. Sherilyn made the granola  a few days ago.  Simple, healthy, and filling enough to keep me going till the day winds down.

My last meal of the day on most days is no later than 5pm.

I’ve come to appreciate how this way of eating — colorful, balanced, and mostly plant-based — has not only helped with digestion but also lifts my mood and energy. Food really is medicine when we eat mindfully.

So tell me, what’s on your plate today? Are you a veggie-lover too, or do you prefer a more protein-heavy meal? I’d love to hear your favorites! 🌱🥗

My light 'dinner' at 1pm today - 4 sticks of chicken satay, sliced cucumber, tomatoes, blanched celery + snow peas, and homemade radish kimchi.

Our lunch and dinner yesterday - chicken satay, beef satay, fried meehoon, kuih, and other dishes from hubby's kitchen.

Homecooked Stuffed Bell Peppers — A Labor of Love from My Clever Home Chef

One of the little joys I’ve come to appreciate is having my daughters home more often, especially when their university schedule gives them a short break from the usual madness.

For the past two months, Sherilyn has been on her short semester, which means she hasn’t been as swamped with classes and assignments as she usually is during her long semesters. With the extra time at home, she’s finally been sleeping properly on her bed (though her old habit of dozing off on the couch still happens whenever she's too tired after a long day out).

A few days ago, we found some red bell peppers sitting in the fridge, still fresh and vibrant, and in true Sherilyn style — she wasted no time whipping up something creative. My clever home chef decided to make Stuffed Bell Peppers for the family!

🍽️ How She Made Her Stuffed Bell Peppers

Sherilyn started by preparing a hearty stuffing mixture using:
✔️ Berkcious minced pork (I bought two packets)
✔️ Chopped carrots for sweetness and texture
✔️ Chopped big onions for flavor
✔️ A blend of herbs and spices to season the pork mixture perfectly

Once the stuffing was ready, the more tedious part began — prepping the bell peppers and sauce.

🔥 A Slight Disagreement Over Grilling!

Sherilyn wanted the bell peppers to have a slightly smoky, charred flavor, so she grilled them directly over the gas stove flame. While I must say the flavor turned out great, I wasn’t too happy with this method. Cooking anything directly on an open gas flame isn't exactly the healthiest practice, so I made a mental note to suggest skipping this step next time.

🍅 Homemade Bell Pepper Tomato Sauce

She didn't just stop at stuffing the bell peppers! Sherilyn went the extra mile and blended some bell peppers together, added a jar of tomato puree, and simmered it into a rich, luscious sauce.

The sauce paired beautifully with the stuffed bell peppers, making the dish extra hearty and satisfying.

⭐️ Final Verdict: 10/10!

I must say — the end result was absolutely delicious. The stuffed bell peppers were juicy and flavorful, and the sauce elevated the whole dish. I gave it a solid 10/10 and told her she could definitely make it again, though I hope she’ll skip the part about grilling directly over the gas next round.

Cooked in our old trusty Le Creuset pot.

Making the Most of a Rainy Day – My Clever Balcony Cleaning Hack

Ever since Maria, our beloved part-time helper, became pregnant and went back to Indonesia to give birth, I’ve been flying solo in the house chores department. I haven’t hired another part-time helper since then, mostly to save some money—and maybe also because no one quite does it like Maria.

I’m really hoping she returns to Malaysia this August as planned, because truth be told, I miss her help—especially with the heavy-duty chores like washing the balcony. The balcony has no water faucet, which makes things a bit of a hassle. When Maria was around, she’d take this task off my hands, bless her heart. But now? It’s back to carrying heavy pails of water from the kitchen or bathroom to scrub the floor, wash the water fountain, and water the plants. Not ideal—especially with my tennis elbow acting up on my right hand.

Then, the other day, after a heavy downpour, I had a little light bulb moment 💡. I thought, why not let Mother Nature lend a hand? Instead of breaking my back hauling water, I grabbed my bathroom broom, stepped out into the rain-soaked balcony, and began scrubbing the floor using the free rainwater.

Yes, I got a little wet—but it was actually fun and oddly therapeutic! No buckets, no strain, just me, the rain, and a cleaner balcony by the time I was done.

This little experience reminded me that sometimes, we just have to think outside the box and look for simple, creative solutions—whether at home or in the office. It’s about working smarter, not harder. And if it saves a few ringgit and an aching back? Even better!

Until Maria returns (fingers crossed!), I’ll keep embracing these little hacks to make life a tad easier—and a lot more interesting 😁

The Joy of Nitrile Gloves: My Must-Have for House Chores

Ever since Maria, my part-time helper, became pregnant in July last year and stopped working for us, I’ve had to take on all the household chores myself. Without a helper, my hands have suffered tremendously—dryness, chapped skin, blisters, and even eczema started appearing between my fingers. That’s when I decided to invest in disposable nitrile gloves, and honestly, I don’t know how I ever managed without them!

I’ve never liked wearing gloves for washing dishes or doing housework because reusable rubber gloves felt too thick, and I couldn’t get a good grip on the dishes. But with disposable nitrile gloves, the grip is excellent, and they’re much thinner, allowing me to feel the texture of the dishes while still protecting my hands. Now, I use at least two pairs daily.

After trying out several brands, I found that the best disposable nitrile gloves are from Top Glove and Glovzone on Lazada. These gloves are more durable and offer a better fit. I also made the mistake of buying cheap nitrile gloves from another seller, and the quality was awful—some already had holes even before I used them! They looked like they had been recycled, which was a big disappointment. So if you have sensitive hands like mine, my advice is to invest in high-quality disposable nitrile gloves. They provide a firm grip and prevent water from leaking inside, which could further irritate the skin.

To maximize their use, I reuse my gloves within the same day. To keep them from sticking together, I sprinkle a bit of talcum powder or organic arrowroot powder inside before hanging them on a hanger out to dry. Over time, I’ve built up quite a collection of disposable nitrile gloves in various pastel shades—green, pink, baby blue, purple, and bright orange. My absolute favorite? The orange disposable nitrile gloves! They are sandblast textured, super durable, and thick enough to be washed and reused several times, making them well worth the slightly higher price.

Honestly, I never thought I’d say this, but I absolutely love my nitrile gloves. They’ve made my most dreaded chore—washing dishes—a much easier and more comfortable task. If you’re struggling with sensitive hands and daily housework, do yourself a favor and get some quality disposable nitrile gloves. You won’t regret it!

My just-arrived stash of disposable nitrile gloves from Top Glove, purchased on the Lazada platform. I bought them during the Lazada pay-day sale.

These are only RM8 for 100 pieces. The quality is good and I can reuse them and wear them several times a day.  I have tried sizes M, L, and XL and conclude that size XL is the most comfortable - they can be worn and removed easily.
I usually apply a layer of hand lotion on my hands before I wear the gloves and sprinkle talcum powder or organic arrowroot powder into the gloves and leave them to dry outside after using.  They will be discarded at the end of the day.

I so love the pastel pink color of these disposable gloves!

The orange nitrile gloves (RM8.10 per box of 20s) are of excellent quality and can be reused several times. I ensure that my hands are clean, dry, and moisturized with hand lotion before I wear the gloves. I need to be extra clean as my hands are now very prone to painful and itchy blisters / eczema patches caused by dishwashing liquid.

My Brother’s Encounter with an Earthquake in Bangkok

Today, my younger brother Roy had the shock of his life when he experienced his first-ever earthquake. He was in the middle of a meeting on the 24th floor of Bhiraj Tower, Bangkok, when suddenly, the entire building started swaying. The earthquake, which originated in central Myanmar, sent tremors across Southeast Asia, and Bangkok was not spared.

Minutes after evacuating the building, Roy sent a panicked message to our family WhatsApp chat group: "OMG, earthquake in Bangkok!" He described how the skyscraper swayed from left to right, and people rushed in a frenzy to the emergency exits. As they descended the stairwell, the building continued to shake, adding to the fear and chaos.

To make matters worse, some emergency doors were locked, causing even more panic. He said people were crying, screaming, and desperate to get out.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time someone in our family has gone through an earthquake. Last year, my older brother Raymond was in Japan on a business trip when an earthquake struck. He was inside a train when the tremors hit, and the train came to an emergency stop. He was stuck inside for several hours, unsure of what was happening outside.

Have you ever experienced an earthquake before? If so, how did you react? Let me know in the comments!

The Management gave the guests two options - to be transferred to another hotel or to continue staying at the Hilton. For the latter option, the stay will be free but stay at your own risk!  Roy chose option 2.

Our Love for Grilled Saba

When it comes to grilled fish, nothing beats the flavorful, juicy goodness of Saba (Japanese mackerel). Every time we dine at Japanese restaurants, grilled saba and salmon are a must-order for my family. However, instead of splurging on restaurant prices, I’ve recently started air-frying saba at home—and let me tell you, we are hooked!

Restaurant vs. Homemade Grilled Saba

For years, I used to buy grilled saba from our neighborhood Japanese takeout restaurant at least once a week. But after experimenting with frozen wild-caught saba from the supermarket, I realized that making it at home is not only cheaper but also tastier! Even Cass, my picky eater, says that the ones I air-fry at home are juicier and more flavorful compared to restaurant versions, which can sometimes be a little dry and tough.

Super Easy Saba Recipe – Just 3 Ingredients!

One of the best things about grilling or air-frying saba at home is how incredibly easy it is to prepare. Here’s my simple foolproof recipe:

Ingredients:

1 frozen wild-caught saba fish (thawed). The ones I usually buy are already halved.
2 to 3 tbsp Kikkoman teriyaki sauce
Black pepper (to taste)

Instructions:

1️ Marinate the saba fish with teriyaki sauce and black pepper for about 15 minutes.
2️
Place it in the air fryer and cook at 180°C (350°F) for 15 minutes.

  • Cook 10 minutes on one side.
  • Flip and cook for 5 more minutes on the other side.
    3️
Serve immediately with a bowl of steaming rice or salad.

That’s it—super easy, minimal effort, and absolutely delicious!

If you love saba, I highly recommend trying this recipe—you might just get hooked like us! 😍🐟🔥

The Rise of Online Business in 2025

The digital economy is thriving. As of 2025, nearly every consumer segment engages with online platforms to shop, learn, work, and connect. Global eCommerce sales are projected to exceed $6.9 trillion, while virtual education is forecasted to top $7.9 trillion in the next few years. Meanwhile, social platforms, remote services, and digital content are reaching unprecedented levels of consumption.

This boom is fueled by several key factors:

  • Widespread access to high-speed internet

  • Advancements in AI and automation

  • The flexibility of remote services

  • The rise of independent work and freelancing

  • Consumer demand for convenience, customization, and instant access

For aspiring entrepreneurs, this translates into endless possibilities for building scalable businesses that don’t require massive startup capital.

Profitable Online Business Models to Explore

Let’s dive into some of the most promising business models and niches for 2025. Whether you’re an artist, teacher, tech enthusiast, or strategist, there’s something here for you.

1. Launching an Online Store

Selling products through a digital storefront remains one of the most reliable and scalable online business models. You can offer anything from handmade crafts and print-on-demand apparel to software tools and digital downloads.

Your profit margin depends on how efficiently you source, create, and ship your products. Many entrepreneurs also use online marketplaces and storefront platforms that simplify logistics like payments and customer service.

To get started, you’ll need:

  • A domain and e-commerce platform

  • A niche product selection

  • Payment processing tools

  • A marketing plan including SEO and social media

2. Dropshipping: Sell Without Inventory

For those who want to sell physical products without managing inventory or warehousing, dropshipping is a low-risk option. You partner with suppliers who fulfill orders on your behalf, while you focus on promotion and customer support.

This business model lets you experiment with different products and niches without upfront inventory costs. Your income comes from the markup between the wholesale price and the retail price.

Requirements include:

  • A reliable supplier

  • An ecommerce website

  • Integrated dropshipping software

  • Ads and influencer outreach

3. Print-on-Demand (POD)

Similar to dropshipping, POD businesses let you sell custom-designed products like t-shirts, mugs, or journals. The printing and shipping are handled by third-party providers after a customer places an order.

This is a great fit for creative entrepreneurs, designers, and influencers. It’s scalable and has low startup risk, making it one of the most beginner-friendly ecommerce models.

What you’ll need:

  • Original artwork or slogans

  • POD service integration

  • A website or marketplace listing

  • Social and email marketing

4. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a hands-off method of earning money by promoting other businesses’ products or services. You earn a commission for each sale made through your unique referral link.

You can monetize content like blogs, YouTube videos, email newsletters, or TikToks by embedding affiliate links. This model is especially effective if you already have an audience or can build a niche community.

Start with:

  • A content platform (blog, YouTube, social media)

  • Partner affiliate programs

  • Email campaigns

  • Organic and paid traffic strategies

5. Creating and Selling Online Courses

If you have deep knowledge or skills in a particular subject—whether it’s cooking, software development, or personal finance—you can monetize that knowledge by creating online courses. Courses can be hosted on your website or platforms like Teachable or Udemy.

Your earnings grow as more students enroll. Many course creators supplement income through upsells, consulting, or exclusive memberships.

To get started:

  • Define a niche topic

  • Create structured, high-value lessons

  • Develop quizzes and downloads

  • Market through SEO and social ads

6. Writing and Selling eBooks

Self-publishing has opened doors for authors and experts to earn income by writing and selling eBooks on topics they’re passionate about. Platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing make this easy to launch.

This business model is ideal for those who want to build passive income through a one-time effort that continues to generate revenue.

What you need:

  • An in-demand topic

  • Well-formatted, high-quality content

  • A distribution channel like Amazon or Gumroad

  • Promotion via blogs, podcasts, and reviews

7. Content Creation Across Platforms

Content creation remains one of the most lucrative online ventures, especially for those who enjoy storytelling, education, or entertainment. Successful creators often publish across multiple platforms—such as YouTube, TikTok, podcasts, blogs, and Instagram—to maximize reach and revenue streams.

Content can be monetized through:

  • Ad revenue (YouTube Partner Program)

  • Brand sponsorships

  • Merchandising (POD)

  • Memberships (Patreon, channel subscriptions)

  • Affiliate links

To grow your presence:

  • Pick a specific niche

  • Maintain consistency and quality

  • Use SEO and hashtags

  • Engage with your audience

8. Podcasting

Audio content is becoming increasingly popular for its accessibility and intimacy. Podcasts can cover virtually any topic and are monetized through ads, sponsorships, listener donations, or merchandise.

Launching a successful podcast requires:

  • A defined niche and audience

  • Quality recording equipment

  • Distribution platforms like Spotify or Apple Podcasts

  • Social promotion and partnerships with guests or other podcasters

9. Blogging for Revenue

Blogging continues to be a long-term, content-driven business that can yield strong returns when paired with smart SEO and monetization strategies. Many bloggers focus on niches like travel, parenting, tech, health, or investing.

Profits come from ad revenue, affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, and selling products or services.

To succeed:

  • Choose a focused topic

  • Publish valuable, keyword-optimized content

  • Grow email subscribers

  • Collaborate with brands or guest bloggers

10. Freelance Services and Consulting

Freelancing remains one of the most direct ways to earn money online. Popular niches include writing, editing, graphic design, web development, social media, and virtual assistance. Specialized services like grant writing, resume writing, and copywriting are also in high demand.

As a freelancer, you can charge hourly, per project, or through retainer models. As your reputation grows, you may scale into an agency or consulting business.

Tools to support your journey:

  • Freelance platforms (Upwork, Fiverr, LinkedIn)

  • Online portfolio or website

  • Invoicing and time-tracking software

  • A specialization or niche

11. Virtual Assistance (VA)

VA businesses support entrepreneurs and companies with administrative or creative tasks. Services can include scheduling, inbox management, data entry, or social media posting. The beauty of being a VA is that you can serve multiple clients at once and work from anywhere.

To get started:

  • Define your service offerings

  • Create a professional profile

  • Promote via freelance job boards

  • Offer discounted packages for your first clients

12. Subscription Box Businesses

Subscription boxes deliver curated products to customers on a regular basis—typically monthly. They can focus on any niche: snacks, fitness gear, beauty products, hobbies, or pet treats.

You earn from recurring subscriptions, with higher profits as you scale and buy in bulk. Engaging packaging and branding helps boost customer retention.

To launch:

  • Identify a target niche

  • Build relationships with suppliers

  • Set up subscription management software

  • Promote through influencers and paid campaigns

13. Social Media Consulting

Businesses of all sizes need help creating compelling social content, running paid ads, and analyzing engagement. Social media consultants craft strategies that help brands grow visibility, build engagement, and convert followers into customers.

To stand out:

  • Build your own active social presence

  • Offer free assessments or content samples

  • Stay current with platform trends

  • Package your services clearly

14. Digital Marketing Agencies

From SEO and PPC to email campaigns and funnel design, digital marketing services are essential to online growth. Starting your own agency lets you serve clients on a larger scale, with the potential to build a full team of experts.

This model is suited for professionals who can lead strategy and manage client relationships.

Initial steps:

  • Define your core services

  • Build case studies and testimonials

  • Hire specialists or use contractors

  • Focus on client results and retention

15. Selling Digital Products

Digital products—such as templates, music, printables, stock photos, or software—are a powerful source of recurring income. They don’t require shipping, inventory, or manufacturing, making them scalable and cost-effective.

Your job is to create value once, then sell it repeatedly.

Success tips:

  • Focus on problem-solving products

  • Use marketplaces like Etsy or your website

  • Bundle items or offer upsells

  • Use email campaigns and paid ads

16. Website Flipping

If you’re savvy with SEO and analytics, website flipping can be a highly profitable venture. The model involves purchasing undervalued websites, improving their design and traffic, and reselling for a higher price.

Return on investment can range from 30% to over 150%.

To begin:

  • Research niche websites with growth potential

  • Improve content and monetization

  • Use platforms like Flippa to buy and sell

  • Leverage analytics tools to show site performance

17. Tech and Developer Services

Businesses need websites, apps, and SaaS tools. If you’re a developer, designer, or UX expert, you can build a strong business by creating custom digital solutions.

In-demand services include:

  • Web development

  • App creation

  • SaaS platforms

  • UI/UX design

  • Bug testing and tech support

These services can be sold through freelance work, or bundled into full-service agencies.

  • Graphic design

  • Photography

  • Video editing

  • Audio production

  • Music licensing

  • Voice acting

These services are used by content creators, ad agencies, businesses, and media firms worldwide.

19. Translation and Language Instruction

For multilingual entrepreneurs, translation services are in high demand—especially in legal, medical, and international business sectors. Similarly, language teaching is booming due to globalization and remote learning.

Whether you use video conferencing or digital courses, both models provide flexible income opportunities.

20. Financial and Legal Services

Finance-focused professionals can offer services such as:

  • Bookkeeping

  • Tax consulting

  • Financial planning

  • Trading mentorship

  • Business budgeting

These roles are ideal for those with accounting, law, or investment backgrounds. Many platforms exist to promote your services and manage client work.
