Back In KL - 23 December 2015

We boarded the 11am ETS today, from Ipoh to KL Sentral.  We were early this time! :D  Thank you Lord for helping us  reach the train station on time. The previous two occasions that we took the train, we were seriously late and only managed to hop onto the train right on the dot! *sweat* !!  My bad!

Our Sunday in Ipoh - 20 December 2015

We were at JJ Swissroll, Ipoh on Sunday to choose a birthday cake for my big brother, Raymond. It's the first time in more than a decade since we last celebrated his birthday together. His birthday falls on Winter Solstice Day (22 December) every year.

My mum did round one of the tang yuan (rice ball) prep by making the dough. She used purple sweet potato for the purple color, organic beetroot powder for the red color and blue pea flower for the blue color.  Cass and Sherilyn helped to prep the dough.

Breakfast In Ipoh - 20 December 2015

Dad, mum and Alycia went to the Kg. Simee wet market to shop for perishables to cook  tonight's dinner and bought some of the yummiest Ipoh hawkers' fare for breakfast.  This is the market that I grew up with. We used to go to this market every Sunday since I was a toddler.

Below - our happy breakkie at home on a bright, sunny morning in Ipoh today...

My favorite Hakka fish balls and pork balls and stuffed super soft and smooth tofu. My favorite since I was a toddler.  On the foreground is prawn wanton...

Below - all my favorite carbo from the market.

Loh Mai Kai, crispy Tai Kau Min (Chinese peanut pancake), kuih kasturi (fried mung bean kuih), yam cake, the world famous egg tarts from Kg. Simee market, Woon Jai Koh (cake in little cup).  Also Char Siew Pau, wantan noodles and  pandan flavor coconut water (not in picture)

Below -  the magical egg tarts from Choy Kee @ Ipoh Simee Market. Best in Ipoh, best in the world! Imagine yourself biting into one such piece de resistance, freshly out from the oven, with crumbling fluffy pastry, bursting with the aroma of butter and a wobbly, hot, creamy centre of rich egg custard. Mmmmmm, that's the bomb!

Many locals think Choy Kee’s egg tarts are the best in Ipoh.– Pictures by James Tan

With so much good food, consisting of mainly carbs, I am pretty sure I will be piling up a few pounds. Nah, I am going to enjoy first and worry about the scale later ;)

Cong Sao Star Dessert @ Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

On our 5th night in Hong Kong, after dinner at Pang's Kitchen, the hubs, his cousin from England, our brother in law from Hawaii and I took a bus to Causeway Bay in search of the best desserts in Hong Kong.

His cousin who is pretty familiar with Hong Kong, brought us to Cong Sao, the must-go to place for Hong Kong style desserts.

Cong Sao's desserts center on lots of mangoes, durians, jellies, puddings and 'tong sui' (sweetened soups).  This tiny eatery can spawn really long queues that will really test your patience. Well, in Hong Kong, you need patience in order to taste good food.  However, come at the right time and you’ll find yourselves sharing a table with the locals, which was what we did.  We shared a table with a local couple of husband and wife and chatted with them.  The queue outside Cong Sao can be more insane on weekends.

The desserts do NOT come cheap (compared to KL prices)...

Here's what we ordered. You'll notice that almost every food picture taken in our trip in Hong Kong is photo-bombed by a spoon or hand. Everyone seems to be famished during each meal and I have to rely on my speedy gonzales hands skillfully to zoom, aim and snap the best picture (while trying my best not to shake my phone) ASAP before the food gets messed up impatiently in just seconds. It's stressful I tell ya!

This lychee and jelly ice shavings dessert is seriously refreshing and yummy!

We were already stuffed to our nostrils but just had to order this durian dessert in ice-shavings when we noticed that almost patron ordered this item. And the aroma of durian wafting in that tiny eatery, drowned us in the mesmerizing smell. We gave in and ordered this just before we left. We thought our tummies could no longer hold any liquid but we stretched our tummies to the max. Gawd, I felt so so so so full  after all these desserts!!

Here are some other star items from Cong Sao. Pictures are taken from other sites.

After our tummy torturing dinner and supper, we roamed the streets of Causeway Bay to speed up our metabolic rate to burn more fat! :D

Hong Kong 2015 Pictures - Day 2 (7 December 2015)

On our 2nd day in Hong Kong on 7 Dec 2015, Alycia and Sherilyn followed their daddy, cousin Lucas, aunt and uncles to Stanley Peak for a very challenging hike. It took them the entire morning to get up to the peak and then down. The tracks and steps were pretty steep and treacherous. The scenery from the peak was breathtaking, as can be seen from the pix below as well as  from the previous post.

While half of the entourage went hiking, Cass and I and some of my SILs and MIL took a bus to Time Square for shopping. Then had Japanese food at Sushi Hero.

We had these...
