Do You Know What Your Teenagers Are Doing Outside?

I was at the park with the gals yesterday evening. For the last few days I've seen this group of 13-year old boys and girls from a nearby co-ed school loitering at the park after school in their school uniform. On normal days, I would see a few boys puffing cigarettes surreptitiously under a tree. On some days, I could see some of them trying out cans of beer under the slides. After they were done with their wanton acts, I would see them throwing the cans into the monsoon drain next to the park whilst some of them would leave their rubbish scattered on the ground. Yesterday, I saw a 13-year old boy and girl under a slide hugging each other, oblivious to their surroundings. When I went closer to have a look, they were so intimate in their conversations and hugging that they didn't even notice me standing there. I was in disbelief that at such a raw tender age, these kids were already in love, more of puppy love I would say.

Minutes later, I saw this lovey dovey couple's friends (also a couple) arrived on a motorcycle. The boy and girl, who looked like they were 15 or 16 year olds, were dressed very ruggedly with punkish hairstyle and jingling accessories and were holding hands lovingly and joined the hugging couple under the slide. When I saw this scene, I told myself that in future, I will never send my gals to a co-education school. These young kids, if without intervention from their parents are surely heading for trouble. The girl might be impregnanted by the boy and later seek illegal abortion. I can even imagine the boy trying to wash his hands clean by not owning up and accusing the girl of sleeping around. I'd seen this happening before to my school mates when I was a teenager.

Minutes later, I saw another group of 13-year old boys playing by the monsoon drain. They were shouting vulgar words in Cantonese and were daring each other to jump across from one side of the drain to the other and the gap between the monsoon drain is at least 2-metre wide. The boys successfully jumped across but 1 fell into the drain. Luckily he wasn't hurt. Later, I saw these boys dumping trash into the monsoon drain. OMG, what a sight - these kids behaved like they were some 'sampah masyarakat' or trashy society. I wonder if their parents know of their activities after school.

When I was leaving the park, I overheard the same group of boys discussing among themselves. Guess what was the topic? Love. I overheard one boy 'advising' his friend in Cantonese that he should treat his girlfriend seriously and they were talking about true love or real love or something to that effect. My goodness, instead of discussing their studies, sports or TV programs, they were talking about true love and girls and they are just a bunch of 13 year olds. I just hope that in future, Alycia and Sherilyn would never be one of those girls whom I'd seen in the park yesterday - behaving like tomboys, shouting vulgar words, sporting punky hairstyle and hugging a boy who's still a kid himself. That's one of the reasons why I had quit my job - so that I can nurture my girls with good values and I pray and hope that my girls will grow up to be decent, obedient and lovely young ladies who will bring me pride and joy.

That is real scary :( I know why my mother was so strict last time although I gave her a lot of headache and heartache.

ya i think i will send my girls to a girls school too just like what my parents did, even if it's further away!!!

boys - they can socialise with them in so many other places.

To me, co-ad schools are fine. What's more important is how we educate our children, how we communicate with them so that they would not be easily affected by peer groups.

I have seen lots of these happening in Spore too... I am worried like you and I hope my kids will not be like that...

Their upbringing is vy important. If they're instilled with good family values, they'd not go astray. But no matter how old our children are, there's no end to our worries.

comment from experience , i was sent to a girls school when i entered secondary 1 because my mom didnt want me mixing with guys -.- wtf . and believe me , the crap i saw and learnt from girls schools were 10 times worst . the cat fights , the lesbians , the gangsters . like wtf ! seriously ! im an average student and came from a Chinese primary school . im a girl with a very adventurous spirit , and by befriending the friends i made in secondary , they taught me all sorts of crap like playing truant . i have to admit that it was partly my fault -.- another issue with gov schools are the loser-fied un- dedicated teachers ! i was placed in one of the last classes because priority was given to those who came from the same primary school ( fyi this is suppose to be some famous school in pj ) im pretty sure you can guess which school im talking about , bt tht`s nt the only school with this problem . 3rd problem will be racial issues , in sec 2 i was placed in a class with only 3 Chinese students , me included and it was bad , like really bad ! there`s a total of 40 smth students in the class and most of them were malays and indians (dont get me wrong , im nt some racist idiot , i speak fluent malay and get along well with malays , indiands , whites , wtvr u name it ) bt the problem lies with the few racist kids who think that their the dominant race so opportunities are usually reserved for them . the teachers are equally the same ! im nt saying tht all gov school teachers are losers , bt most of them are . i had a few nice teachers who helped me with my studies , spent extra time . and actually TEACH! bt that`s really 1 in a million ! there ws also a case few months back , about a girl who ws a prostitute she ws 13 . and when the school found out , they expelled her before the cops or media found out , just to save their schools name and cover their asses -.- when she ws discovered the public blamed the school and her parents . the schools name ws tarnish and fyi she moved there less than 3 months . *hint hint it ws also the same school in pj . Sooooo , here`s a few tips , dont believe the bullshit ppl tell u about hw famous or good a gov school is . unless yr kid is a straight a student , dont sent her to a gov school hoping she`ll come out the same . 2 ! start saving up for an international or private school , trust me it`ll be worth it ! 3 , start looking for scholarship for yr kids and train them to dream big and work hard for it . many international schools offer scholarships for kids starting age 10. and if they are good enough look for international scholarships , ex : singapore . Believe me , start them young and train them up now . I have a younger sister and she tried out a scholarship few months back . she made it till the 2ed stage and was very close to the interview . although she didnt win it , i believe she came back with many good experiences . all the way from visiting the school to writing a letter and making it for the entrance exam . it opened her eyes to many new possibilities and opportunities the world has installed for her .

i like to encourage her to think big and dare to dream . I like to believe tht if i ws given the same chances as a kid , i would have saved alot of my parent(s) money . she also got to learn alot about preparing for scholarships , dont wait till they are 18 to teach them about scholarships . its too late ! so , the end of the story is me transferring to a private school mid of secondary 2 and am now in sec 5 . Dont think of training yr kids early as being `kia su` , those are what the losers tell themselves to feel better . oh and btw my sister is 10 ! Also remember to keep an open mind , my mom dosent believe in pushing my sister simply because she is too young , i see so much potential in her and cant stand to see it go to waste . My brother on the other hand came from a gov school and is a straight a student who is now a med student . i guess gov school worked out fine for him , and pleaseeee note that he is a straight a student and was never in an average class ! my sister is now still in a chinese primary school and is starting preps for a next scholarship in a year and a halfs time . I hope this inspires and helps you on your view on `teenagers` and how you can start em young to avoid nonesense like this happening to your kids . all the best , with love SHL :)
