For the first time in my life, I came across a papaya with seeds that had sprouts shooting out. I got a shock of my life when I cut the papaya into half and saw white stuff inside. For a moment I thought they were maggots but on taking a closer look, I realized they were just shoots like bean sprouts, sprouting out from the seeds. Ewwwwww, they looked really gross and I only ate half the papaya. I wonder if it's safe to eat papayas with sprouted seeds. I had read from a source that potatoes with shoots sprouting out are toxic or harmful to our bodies if consumed. So I'm not sure if the same goes with fruits with sprouted seeds. Anyone has any views on this for this health freak mom?
A macro shot of the sprouted seeds. Don't the shoots look very much like bean sprouts? Geli or not? Eeeeekkk!!

It's perfectly ok to eat the papaya. The sprouts u don't want to eat are those of potatoes but u can still remove the sprouted buds and eat the potato. Garlic bulbs sprout all the time, just remove the green part and use the bulb. Only problem is that if it sprouts too much, the bulb becomes soft and shrivelled.
me too. never came across sprouts in papaya
interesting, i've also never seen this before.
btw, didnt know abt the patatoes thingy. in fact, i will remove those and continue cooking. now i know better. thanks for mentioning it.
you have already eaten half of it! no harm eating another half.. hahaha.. i oso feel geli seeing that. if me, i must have freak out when i cut it! Sure terkejut to the max!
first time seeing this!!! i wonder what causes it? too much nutrients???
that looks like a yellow color variety papaya (wong yoke), more pungent aroma and sweeter. I came across with sprouted seeds too, also yellow variety but only about half of your sprouting seeds. I ate it ! I think no harm lar..
Wow, that's very weird! Hey can I send this to the Star paper quoting ur blog?
Sheela... you can take this pic from my blog but don't quote my blog lar, so malu, hehe!
Hey thxs! Nolah will quote ur blog since I didnt take the pic myself.
taugeh kahwin ngan papaya, inilah anaknye.
I was googling this very topic because yesterday I opened a papaya that looked exactly like this one, with the seeds already sprouted like that. I did think that they were maggots too!! I cut it up anyway and my kids and I ate the whole thing (before I found your blog). No harm...hopefully!
This just happened to me too. I eat papaya almost every day and this is a first for me. I wonder if it is because the days are warmer, and so the seeds are able to germinate? I imagine that in nature, a papaya would fall from its source and that the fruit would nurture and protect the sprouts as they grow up.
Lol... So I am glad I am not the only one.. I opened a papaya today and saw the sprouted seed and well got the shock of my life too.. I am glad it's still okay to eat... thanks for the info
The seeds are kind of peppery and are ground and used as pepper sometimes, and papaya leaves are also edible...well, used for tea, so unlike potatoes, tomatoes eggplant and other members of the solanum family which you would NOT eat the sprouts because the plant parts are poisonous, the sprouts of a papaya are fine if you like the taste. I just had a papaya with sprouted seeds too, and actually enjoyed some of the sprouts in a wrap, and planted the rest! They are amazing plants and grow so fast!
I bought a nice looking papaya from Trader Joe's and when I opened it voilla.....sprouted seeds.
Just opened one today and made me Google it. Weirdest thing ever 😜 i tasted one spout...YUK! Super pungent with a peppery av after taste.
Hi Magda
Research studies have proven that papaya seeds can effectively kill intestinal parasites including hookworm, tapeworms and pinworms. I sometimes eat a teaspoon of papaya seeds when I eat papaya ;)
This happened to me today, googled, and it led me here,a post from EXACTLY 11 YEARS AGO!
Glad that you took the effort to leave a comment though this post is 11 years ago! Hope you enjoyed your papaya sans the sprouted seeds ;)
