Visit To Hai Kah Lang's Latest Branch in Imbi (Hai Kah Lang TRX)

Hai Kah Lang, a Michelin-approved fresh seafood noodles restaurant, has been making waves in our country ever since it received the prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand Award in 2022. As we celebrated our country's Independence Day on 31 August 2023, my family and I decided to visit Hai Kah Lang again to indulge in some fresh seafood and this time to try their latest branch in Imbi (opposite TRX, KL’s new social heart).

We visited Hai Kah Lang's main branch in Cheras early this year and enjoyed the seafood noodles very much.

Hai Kah Lang is a pet-friendly restaurant and there were patrons who brought their pooches along to the restaurant.

Hai Kah Lang's ascent to culinary stardom began when it earned the coveted Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2022. The judges were captivated by the restaurant's commitment to serving only the freshest catch, primarily sourced from northern Borneo. What sets Hai Kah Lang apart is its owner, who also runs a seafood stall just across the street in Cheras. This direct connection to the seafood source ensures that every dish served on the restaurant's tables boasts unparalleled freshness and quality.

We arrived at Hai Kah Lang TRX around 11 a.m., filled with eager anticipation. As expected, there was already a vibrant queue snaking its way outside the restaurant. Chairs were thoughtfully placed for waiting patrons, while others, like us, stood under the warm embrace of the Malaysian sun. Thankfully, huge commercial fans strategically positioned provided a much-needed respite from the heat. After approximately 30 minutes, our number was finally called, and we eagerly made our way inside. Thankfully, our food arrived pretty quickly as the staff had earlier taken our order on an iPad whilst we were queueing up.

The large kitchen crew, busy at work.

A very spacious restaurant. This is just indoor. There are also tables outdoors and patrons who bring their pets with them can dine al fresco.

Our family has diverse tastes, and Hai Kah Lang's menu caters to all. Hubs and MIL opted for the clear soup noodles, featuring a delectable assortment of fresh seafood. Meanwhile, Cass couldn't resist the allure of crab porridge. Personally, I went for a carb-free option, selecting a bowl of mixed seafood to savor the pure essence of the ocean. Each dish was an explosion of fresh seafood flavors, showcasing the incredible culinary expertise that earned Hai Kah Lang its Michelin accolade.

One standout was the crab porridge, a fragrant delight brimming with the rich aroma of crab meat. Hubs also indulged in a unique appetizer – jellyfish prepared in the style of Malaysian fruit rojak, adorned with rojak sauce and crushed peanuts. To elevate our seafood adventure, he ordered a bowl of Emperor clams (giant lala) and blanched fresh oysters, each bite transporting us to the seaside.

My personal highlight was the Hai Kah Lang sea bird's nest drink. A refreshing concoction of fresh coconut water, coconut milk, and coconut flesh, it was the perfect complement to our seafood feast. I enjoyed it so much that I didn't want to share a single sip.  The drink has a slight blueish hue (from blue pea flowers, I guess), giving it a delightful aesthetic.

Sea bird's nest drink - a super refreshing and delightful drink for coconut lovers like myself.

After a satisfying brunch at Hai Kah Lang, we explored more culinary gems in the vicinity since hubs was quite free. We headed to Florentine La Bisteccheria in Chow Kit, known for its exquisite Italian pastries, cakes, and coffee. Sipping on our coffee and indulging in decadent desserts was a sweet way to conclude our meal.

Cass is a coffee lover too and her favorite is Piccolo.

As we strolled through the area, we discovered trendy cafes lining the streets. Our mission was to find a suitable café for takeaway meals for Alycia and Sherilyn, who couldn't join us due to their part-time job at a café. We stumbled upon Kwong Cheung Loong Kopitiam Bar, where we ordered fried rice with ayam percik for them before heading home.

A Heartwarming Act of Honesty

Last Friday Cass spent almost the entire day at Pavillion Bukit Jalil as it was the school holidays. She had RM80 worth of Parkson vouchers from the mall to use, thanks to us contributing so much to the mall for her figure skating classes at the skating rink. The vouchers were redeemed as part of a  shopping campaign organized by the shopping mall.  Before her figure skating class started, she went to Parkson to use the vouchers. I told her to get herself some clothes.

As Cass tried on a pair of pants, something unexpected happened. The button on the pants came loose, leaving her feeling terribly embarrassed and apologetic. Many of us might have shrugged it off, blamed it on wear and tear, or simply left without mentioning it to anyone. But not Cass. Her moral compass pointed firmly in the direction of honesty and conscience.

Rather than pretending nothing happened, Cass approached the store assistant and, with genuine sincerity, apologized for the mishap. She even went a step further and inquired if she could pay for the tailoring service to fix the button. This act of responsibility and integrity caught the store assistant by surprise. In a world where such incidents are often shrugged off, Cass's actions were truly exceptional.

The store assistant, equally touched by Cass's honesty, assured her that it was okay, and that someone would take care of fixing the button. But Cass's conscience was not at ease. And so, she offered the store assistant a RM20 Parkson cash voucher as a token of her gratitude for the store assistant’s help.

Initially, the store assistant hesitated and declined Cass's offer, but Cass insisted, explaining that it was essential for her peace of mind. Eventually, the store assistant accepted the cash voucher, recognizing the sincerity behind Cass's gesture.

When I asked Cass why she felt compelled to be so honest and generous in a situation where many would have chosen otherwise, her response was simple yet profound. She said that her conscience wasn't clear, and by giving the store assistant RM20, she felt better. It wasn't about the money; it was about doing what was right.

I know that I wouldn't have been as honest as Cass was in this situation, and that's why her story resonates so deeply with me. It's a reminder that kindness, honesty, and a clear conscience are values worth cherishing and passing on to the next generation.

Last Saturday, Alycia and Sherilyn brought back this box of yummy goodies from Front Room, the cafe where they worked part-time. There were two birthday parties held at the cafe on that day.

Each piece of morsel in this box was super delicious as they were made from quality ingredients.  We had them for breakfast over the next few days. Bliss 😄

Haru, Our Heroic Feline That Saved the Day

Pets have a remarkable way of becoming an integral part of our lives, and often, they go above and beyond to look out for us. Today Haru, turned into a hero by saving us from a potential disaster.

It was a typical afternoon, and I was indulging in a much-needed siesta on my work chair. However, my peaceful nap was interrupted by an insistent scratching sound on my chair. Haru, my smart and perceptive cat was busily scratching away at my expensive office chair.

Haru knows me well, and she's well aware that I don't appreciate her scratching my chair. So to get what she wants (which is always her meals and snacks), she will scratch on my office chair till I get up from the chair and attend to her needs. And there was no exception today.

With Haru's relentless scratching, I couldn't ignore her any longer. I reluctantly pushed myself up from my chair, feeling drowsy and disoriented. As I stood up, I noticed something alarming—a faint smell of burning. Panic surged through me as I realized something was amiss. I rushed to the kitchen and lo and behold, I found an empty pot sitting on the stove, its burner still turned on, flames dancing beneath it. Someone had heated up some soup and after pouring the soup into her bowl, had forgotten to turn off the stove.

I quickly turned off the burner and let out a sigh of relief and it was then that it hit me: Haru had saved the day. She had sensed the danger from the burning smell, with her persistent scratching, awakened me just in time to prevent a catastrophe.

I turned to Haru, my eyes filled with gratitude and love. I scooped her into my arms, hugging her tightly. Her cleverness and unwavering determination have kept us safe today.  Bravo to Haru!

Haru's favorite morning past-time: sun-bathing at whichever spot in the house that has sunlight 😸

My Careless Daiso Purchase

We've all experienced those moments when we make a purchase that leaves us shaking our heads in disbelief. Today, as I strolled through Pavilion Bukit Jalil after Cass successfully passed her figure skating tests, I found myself in one such situation – a tale of a seemingly innocent Daiso purchase that turned out to be quite a costly lesson in assumptions.

The day began on a high note as Cass triumphantly conquered not just one, but two figure skating tests. Celebratory spirits were high, and after a fulfilling lunch at Grand Harbor restaurant, I decided to make a quick pit stop at Daiso to pick up some household essentials. Among the items on my list was a new stainless steel bowl for my beloved cat, Haru. Little did I know that this seemingly straightforward purchase would lead to a lesson in mindfulness and attention to detail.

Our sumptuous lunch at Grand Harbor, Pavillion Bukit Jalil

As I perused the array of stainless steel bowls neatly displayed, one particular option caught my eye. A double-layered, lightweight, matte-finished bowl seemed like the ideal choice for Haru's dining needs. Pleased with my find, I made my way to the checkout counter, paid for my items, and continued my leisurely stroll through the mall.

It was during this leisurely stroll that reality came crashing down. A nagging feeling prompted me to review the total on the receipt against the number of items I had purchased. To my dismay, the numbers didn't add up. Panic ensued as I closely examined the Daiso receipt, and that's when I discovered the source of my mistake – the stainless steel bowl I had chosen for Haru was listed at a staggering RM17.70, not the RM5.90 I had assumed.

The RM17.70 double-layer constructed stainless steel bowl from Daiso. It is heat-proof on the outside, which makes it perfect for putting hot soups.

At that moment, my heart sank as I realized the gravity of my carelessness. The bowl intended for my furry friend, which I had purchased without properly scrutinizing the price, was now three times more expensive than I had anticipated. My initial assumption that all Daiso items adhered to the familiar RM5.90 price point had led me astray.

Although I contemplated rushing back to Daiso for a refund or exchange, time constraints and a husband eager to depart held me back. As I weighed my options, I decided to chalk this up to a lesson learned. This wasn't just about an unfortunate purchase; it was a reminder to never underestimate the importance of clarity and attention to detail.

Toilet selfie, as usual 😁

Upon reflection, it became clear that my lack of reading glasses had played a significant role in this mishap. As age has caught up on me, I now need reading glasses to read small prints. But I don't bring my reading glasses out. The seemingly ambiguous digits on the price tag appeared to resemble the familiar "Yen" symbol rather than the Malaysian Ringgit. This experience underscored the value of taking the extra moment to ensure I had the proper information before making a decision.

In the end, the stainless steel bowl that was meant for Haru has found its place for my own use, serving as a tangible reminder of the importance of mindfulness in all transactions. The bowl will always make me chuckle to myself each time I use it, reminding me of my oversight.

So, the next time I find myself amidst the charm of Daiso's aisles, I'll be armed not just with my shopping list but also with a renewed commitment to careful consideration. And I must remember to bring my reading glasses out or just use my phone's camera function to enlarge small prints 😛

Sherilyn's Break Before She Starts College

Sherilyn's 5-month break is coming to an end.  Before embarking on another new journey next week, she took the ETS train to Ipoh on Wednesday to visit her grandparents. It's also to celebrate her koong koong's 80th birthday, which falls on 19 August 2023.

Sherilyn will commence her Foundation in Natural and Built Environments next week at Taylor's College. And if Architecture is for her, she will proceed with the Bachelor of Science in Architecture. If not, she can opt to study Business, Quantity Surveying, or other courses.

On Tuesday, Alycia followed her grandma, aunty and cousin from England to Penang and then to Ipoh.  They celebrated my dad's birthday at the Mun Choong Restaurant in Ipoh yesterday.  Too bad Cass, hubs and I had to be in KL as Cass has to go to school while hubs has been busy with work.

School holidays will only begin in another week.  Cass and I will only make a trip to Ipoh on 28 August by ETS train to have another round of celebration with dad.

This super chill girl gave me a panic attack on the day that she was supposed to take the train back to Ipoh.  Her train was at 3pm but she went out for lunch with her friend at the cafe that she works at, collected cakes from the cafe for her grandparents and even gave Haru a bath.  Then she had a stomach upset and was stuck on the throne until 2.30pm, when I hollered at her incessantly to hurry up or risk missing the train. She only left the house at 2.35pm! The traffic in KL is unpredictable and the traffic jam is almost perpetual. I had to help her lug her luggage to the Grab car as she was still hobbling after an injury sustained while bouldering with her sisters, cousin and second cousins on Sunday. I asked the Grab driver to try his best to send Sherilyn to the Sentral Station before 3pm.  Yup, I know it wouldn't really help to tell the driver to try his best coz if the traffic was bad, there's really nothing much that he could do. But I wanted the driver to drive a little faster and be aware that his passenger had a train to catch😂

With only 25 minutes left before the train takes off, will Sherilyn reach the station on time?! Even if she did, she had to walk down to the platform and search for her coach. It's Ok if she could walk briskly but she was hobbling and had three bags with her!  This is SO Sherilyn, my middle child who loves challenges and thrives in a complicated and challenging environment 😑

I was so worried that Sherilyn won't be able to cope with lugging so many things with an injured ankle.

While Sherilyn was in the car, I frantically went through the ETS app to check what time the next train was. There was a 3.30 pm train and I messaged Sherilyn to take that train if she missed the 3pm train.  Thank God Sherilyn managed to hop onto the train in the nick of time and she gloated to me that she was already inside the train 10 minutes before the train went off! 🙏😬

Super yummy banana walnut bread from Front Room, the cafe that Sherilyn works at, for my parents.

Sherilyn and my parents visited Mirror Lake (Tasik Cermin) yesterday.

With granny at Kin Loong Valley.

My SIL from England treated everyone to a sumptuous dinner at Mun Choong Restaurant to celebrate my dad's 80th birthday.

May God bless my papa with many, many more happy birthdays.

The Unfortunate Damage of a Homemade Blueberry Cake

Sometimes life has a way of adding a sprinkle of unpredictability to our best-laid plans. Such was the case for Sherilyn, who found herself caught in the whirlwind of a cake catastrophe that she never saw coming.

Sherilyn was recently commissioned by her aunt who resides in England to bake a cake for her grandaunt’s birthday.  Despite her bustling schedule of work and dance classes, Sherilyn accepted the job and was determined to rise to the occasion. She decided to bake a blueberry genoise cake. With three punnets of fresh blueberries, the finest whipping cream, and her heart full of dedication, she embarked on this baking project.

Sherilyn spared every available moment to craft a cake that would be remembered and enjoyed by her grandaunt. She meticulously sourced fresh blueberries and quality whipping cream for the cake. She made a luscious blueberry compote and the genoise cake a day earlier.  On the morning of delivering the cake to her grand-aunt, she woke up early to meticulously decorate the cake before leaving for work.

The beautiful blueberry cake before disaster struck.

As the final strokes of creativity were laid upon the cake, Sherilyn was ready to present her masterpiece to her grandaunt. In a twist of fate, however, the universe had a different plan. Entrusting her colleague, a part-time delivery driver with the responsibility of transporting the delicate creation to its destination turned out to be the turning point of this tale.

In an unfortunate turn of events, the cake's top layer succumbed to gravity's pull, resulting in a heartbreaking collapse. The news of the mishap reached Sherilyn through her delivery driver friend, leaving her with a mix of frustration and sorrow. The cake, a labor of love and dedication, lay in ruins, unable to be salvaged.

The damaged cake :(

While it was evident that the mishap occurred due to the unintended actions of the delivery driver (he may have driven too fast or dropped the cake), Sherilyn found herself in a challenging position. The delivery driver is her friend and this made it difficult for her to place blame and to express her disappointment, despite the financial loss and frustration she had to bear.

After disaster struck, Sherilyn only remembered that his friend's car's air-conditioner was not working! It was truly a lack of foresight on both parties.

Sherilyn transformed the cake scraps, extra cream and blueberry compote into a yummilicious Cake Crumb Trifle.

To add to the complexity, the cake had spent too much time outside the fridge, rendering it unfit for consumption. Sherilyn thought that she could still salvage the cake for our own consumption but the cake had turned bad.

Despite the setback, Sherilyn showed remarkable maturity by swiftly arranging an alternative solution – she asked her delivery driver friend to purchase a cake from a nearby bakery as she had earlier informed her grandaunt that she was sending a cake to her. How could she tell her grandaunt now that the cake is damaged?

It's a lesson learned to never underestimate the fragility of transporting a cake, even when it's in the hands of a well-meaning friend.  And even with the best of intentions, can sometimes result in disappointment and setbacks.

My advice to Sherilyn is to never send a fragile cake to anyone again using express delivery service.  We should instead deliver the cake ourselves or get the recipient to collect it from us. And if both parties are too busy to make a drive, then send something that's not fragile to the recipient.

I also found out after the incident that one of the items that will not be delivered by Grab Express is fragile items like cakes, although her friend is not attached to Grab.

The Scam That Taught My Daughter a Valuable Lesson

Today Alycia had an unfortunate encounter with scammers that left her feeling vulnerable and taken advantage of. I’m sure she had read about such a modus operandi masterminded by scammers yet she got lured into it.

This morning, while I was out, Alycia received an SMS claiming to be from J&T courier, stating that there was an issue with her delivery address. Coincidentally, Alycia was expecting some parcels to arrive. The message requested her personal and bank details to verify her identity as the intended recipient of the parcel. Without realizing the potential danger, Alycia clicked on the link provided and unwittingly shared her personal information with the scammers.

Fortunately, I arrived home just in time, and Alycia confided in me about what had happened, realizing that she may have been lured into the scammer’s trap. Recognizing the signs of a scam, I immediately assured her that she had indeed been targeted. We wasted no time in taking action to protect her finances. First, I advised her to call her two banks to cancel her debit cards. It took some time and patience, but she successfully canceled both cards before any significant damage was done.

After canceling the debit cards, Alycia visited the bank branches to obtain new cards, incurring a fee of RM12 for each replacement card. Though she was fortunate that the scammers had only managed to make a minor purchase of RM4+ on something from Google using her card details, this incident served as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in the face of increasingly sophisticated scams.

Unfortunately, scams have become increasingly prevalent in recent years, targeting unsuspecting individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Even the savviest of individuals can fall victim to cleverly orchestrated schemes, as demonstrated by my friend, a seasoned businesswoman in her 50s, who lost RM7k to online job scammers. Her daughter had applied for some part-time online jobs after her SPM  exam and she deposited over RM7k into the scammers’ accounts!  Even my own mother, a cautious individual, was scammed recently (albeit for a very small amount) while attempting to purchase a piece of cooking equipment on Facebook which requested her credit card details.

For Alycia, this experience was an eye-opener. She has now learned that scammers are relentless and use various tactics to exploit innocent people. We cannot afford to be complacent in the digital world. It is vital to educate ourselves and our loved ones about the common tactics used by scammers, such as phishing emails, fraudulent calls, and misleading SMS messages cleverly orchestrated to lure unsuspecting victims.

While the incident was disheartening, it provided an essential lesson for my daughter and our family.  As parents, we must continue to educate and support our children in navigating the digital landscape safely. Scammers may be getting smarter, but with awareness and caution, we can protect ourselves from falling into their scheming traps.

The Day My Car Refused to Budge

Yesterday as I prepared to head out to hubby’s shop to collect food, I was greeted with an unexpected ordeal - my car's engine refused to start. Little did I know that this day would turn into a series of unfortunate events.

As I turned the key in the ignition, all I heard was a feeble choke. Panic set in, and I immediately assumed the car's battery had gone flat. Since I had faced similar issues in the past, I felt relatively confident that it was nothing more than a routine inconvenience.  I informed Hubs who was busy at work and he told me to call our regular mechanic, Ah Heng.

Ah Heng sent his son who’s almost the same age as Alycia (aged 20-21) over to our condo. He’s currently pursuing a degree in electrical engineering. Very quickly, he managed to replace my car’s battery with a new one.  But still, my car wouldn’t budge and only let out a feeble click.  I called Ah Heng and he told me to get my car towed to his workshop for him to check.

Ah Heng informed me that many car insurance policies provide free towing services as part of their coverage. I have been driving for years but had never utilized this benefit or was even aware that such a benefit existed. He suggested I contact my insurance provider to arrange for the towing, and that's exactly what I did.  It turned out my policy did indeed cover free towing, saving me the extra expense during this stressful situation.  The waiting time for the tow truck to arrive at my condo was pretty fast,  i.e. in less than an hour from the time the call was made this morning.

My heart sank. If the problem wasn’t the battery, what could it be?  Just last month, my car needed a replacement for a major component of the electronic unit which cost Hubs quite an amount. This new problem would undoubtedly put a dent in his finances as his own car got discharged from the workshop just last week. Again!  The last thing I want is another hefty repair bill, especially after he had spent a significant amount on car maintenance on both our cars over the past three years.

So I guess it’s time to get ourselves new cars to prevent all these problems from regularly (monthly issue, to be precise 😥) creeping up on our cars!  🤑💸💸💸

My car is being towed out of the condo basement.  I also found out from the tow truck operator that charges for basement towing are more expensive than roadside towing as it's trickier to tow a vehicle out from the basement via the narrow, winding ramps.

Cassandra’s Heartwarming Grab Ride Encounter

In this fast-paced world, small acts of kindness often go unnoticed amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, Cass’ Grab ride today shone a spotlight on a remarkable Grab driver who went above and beyond to make her ride a memorable one.

After a long day at school, Cassandra was eager to unwind and make the most of her free time at the skating rink to practise her figure-skating moves, followed by class at 8 p.m. With the Grab fare at its lowest at around 4-ish p.m., she quickly booked a ride to the mall, where the skating rink is.  Earlier today, I bought her a teriyaki salmon don bento for her to bring to the skating rink to eat.

As Cassandra settled into the Grab car, she had a small favor to ask the driver. Hungry from almost the entire day in school, she inquired if it would be possible for her to have her meal inside the car.  To her astonishment, the Grab driver responded with an unexpected gesture. He graciously allowed Cassandra to eat her meal inside his car. This act of kindness touched Cassandra deeply, as she was well aware of the potential inconvenience from the fishy smell of the teriyaki salmon or accidental spills it might cause.

Overwhelmed by the driver's generosity, Cass captured the precious moment on her phone. She took a picture of her yummy teriyaki salmon don in the Grab car and Whatsapp-ed me the photo.

When Cassandra sent the photo to me, I initially couldn't believe that the Grab driver would allow her to eat in the car.  Hubs and I would not allow our girls to eat in our cars knowing that they may drop or spill food/drinks in the car. Moreover, the smell of the food is sure to stink the car for days.  What's more, it's salmon fish!

The thought of a Grab driver allowing a passenger to eat inside the car seemed too extraordinary to be true. However, when Cass reassured me that she wasn’t pulling my leg, I realized that the Grab driver’s act of kindness was, in fact, real.

In today's fast-paced world, where time is of the essence, it's easy to overlook the little things that can make a significant impact on someone's day. The Grab driver's compassion was an extraordinary example of how a small act can leave a lasting impression on a person's heart. Every act of kindness has the potential to create a ripple effect, touching the lives of many.

Do you have a heartwarming story to share too?

Embracing the Air Fryer Revolution

In the realm of kitchen appliances, there is one particular gem that has captured the hearts and taste buds of my family: the Philips air fryer. This revolutionary device has become an indispensable part of our daily cooking routine, bringing a delightful touch of crispiness and convenience to our meals.

Here’s why I love my air fryer and why it has become an essential addition to our culinary arsenal.

1.  Versatile:

The air fryer has become our go-to kitchen companion for a wide variety of dishes. Whether it's warming up bread, cakes (crispy chocolate brownies and crispy Swiss rolls!), and pastries to a golden perfection or creating crispy delights like fish, chicken chops, and pork chops, the air fryer consistently delivers outstanding results. Its versatility extends to cooking vegetables, including mushrooms, ensuring they retain their natural flavors and nutrients while acquiring a delectable crispness.

2.  Oil-Free Wonder:

One of the most remarkable aspects of the air fryer is its ability to produce crispy goodness without the need for excessive oil. By utilizing hot air circulation, this ingenious device creates a similar texture and flavor to traditionally deep-fried foods, but with a fraction of the oil. The reduction in oil intake makes our meals healthier, while still maintaining the satisfying crunch we crave.

3.  Splatter-Free Cooking:

Gone are the days of battling with stubborn oil splatters on the stovetop. The air fryer's enclosed cooking chamber ensures a clean and mess-free experience. No more scrubbing oil stains off the walls and countertops! With the air fryer, we can enjoy our favorite fried treats without the aftermath of a greasy kitchen.  I love how crispy my lobak (aka meat rolls) is when fried in the air fryer without oil splatters. Even my MIL who is an anti-modern gadget person loves using the air fryer to fry her favorite spam meat and bacon.

4.  Effortless Clean-Up:

The air fryer's convenience extends beyond its cooking capabilities. Cleaning up after a meal is a breeze. Most air fryer baskets and trays are dishwasher-safe or require only a quick wipe-down with soapy water. This simplicity in maintenance saves valuable time and energy, allowing us to focus on enjoying our culinary creations. I usually wipe down the air fryer with chemical-free wet wipes. I buy dry wipes online and wet the wipes with water.

Chicken chop - our top favorite dish prepped in the air fryer.

As devoted fans of the air fryer, our current model has been dutifully serving us day in and day out for almost a year. It is a hand-me-down from my mom as she bought a new air fryer with a bigger capacity.  However, should it ever decide to retire, we would undoubtedly invest in another air fryer, perhaps one with a larger capacity.

Do you have an air fryer at home? What are some of your favorite air-fried creations that bring delight to your family's table? Share your love for this remarkable kitchen companion in the comments below!

The Over Supply of Covid Self-Test Kits: From Scarcity to Abundance

When Covid self-test kits first hit the market at the height of the pandemic, there was a frenzy to purchase them. People rushed to pharmacies and online platforms to secure their own test kits, fearing the unknown and desiring peace of mind. Stocks flew off the shelves though these kits were very costly, and shortages became a common occurrence. It seemed like the demand for these kits would continue indefinitely.

Fast forward to the present, however, and the situation has drastically changed. With the passage of time and the decline in Covid-19 cases in many areas, these once-scarce test kits have now become an overabundance, readily and cheaply available in pharmacies and shops. The enthusiasm for self-testing has diminished significantly. People have grown complacent, feeling less inclined to test themselves even when experiencing flu-like symptoms. Consequently, the market has been flooded with an overabundance of Covid self-test kits. This surplus has led to unique marketing strategies, such as offering the kits for free as promotional items or incentives.

One such example is the supermarket chain 99 Speedmart, which recently provided free Covid self-test kits to customers who spent a certain minimum amount on groceries. This initiative aimed to encourage customers to take the test and ensure their safety. While it may have attracted some individuals who were previously reluctant to purchase the kits, the larger question remains: Why have people become less inclined to test themselves when they feel unwell?

Covid self-test kit, given out as free gift by 99 Speedmart recently.

While many people may have grown complacent, it is essential to emphasize the importance of continued vigilance. Testing oneself when feeling unwell can help identify potential infections early on, enabling appropriate measures to be taken to protect oneself and others. Despite the surplus of test kits, it is crucial to maintain a responsible approach to self-testing.

In our family, we continue to prioritize self-testing whenever any of us have flu-like symptoms. It serves as a precautionary measure and allows us to make informed decisions regarding our health.

Do you still perform a self-test when you feel unwell with flu symptoms?

Sherilyn's Journey as a Part-Time Cashier at a Popular Bakery

After her SPM exam in March this year, Sherilyn landed a part-time job as a cashier at a renowned bakery located in Gardens Mall. In addition to the attractive wages, this opportunity came with several incredible perks and benefits that made her experience even more rewarding.

One of the key reasons why Sherilyn decided to join this particular bakery was the impressive wage package offered to part-time employees. Despite working only twice a week, she receives a fair salary that exceeds her expectations. Moreover, I am delighted to see that her employer goes the extra mile by providing EPF (Employees’ Provident Fund) and SOCSO contributions, which ensures her future financial security.

1. Delicious Perks: Working in a bakery has its own delectable advantages. Sherilyn is fortunate enough to enjoy complimentary bread, buns, and cakes from the bakery. This not only satisfies her own taste buds but also allows her to share the delicious treats with our family. Additionally, she has the privilege of purchasing bakery products at a discounted staff price, giving us all the opportunity to savor the bakery's mouthwatering creations.

2. Company Dinner: A recent highlight of Sherilyn's experience at the bakery was the company dinner held at a Japanese restaurant in Gardens Mall earlier this week. To ensure all staff members could attend, the bakery closed a few hours earlier. Sherilyn had the responsibility of closing up the shop before joining her colleagues for the event. Not only did this dinner serve as a team-building exercise, but it also created a sense of camaraderie among the staff. The opportunity to bond outside of work strengthened their professional relationships and created a more positive work environment.

3. Surplus Treats: As a cashier, Sherilyn had the privilege of closing the bakery on occasion. This responsibility occasionally resulted in a surplus of unsold bread, buns, and pastries. On those lucky days, she was allowed to bring home the excess products. This meant that our family got to enjoy a delightful breakfast the next day, filled with fresh and mouthwatering baked goods. It was a lovely way for the bakery to minimize waste while simultaneously bringing joy to their employees and their families.

Delicious buns and cannellini from the bakery yesterday.

Sherilyn's part-time job as a cashier at the popular bakery in Gardens Mall has been an enriching experience for her. The combination of competitive wages, essential benefits, and delightful perks has made this opportunity truly special. Not only does she enjoy the financial stability and tasty treats, but she also gets to be a part of a supportive team that values its employees.

However, I’m quite sad that Sherilyn’s days at the bakery are numbered as she will soon resign to begin her architectural studies at Taylor’s University in August this year.  Nonetheless, I couldn't be prouder of Sherilyn for finding such a rewarding part-time job, and I'm grateful to the bakery for providing her with this remarkable experience.

Lunch At Sin Kee Restaurant @ Little India, Brickfields

On a recent public holiday, the hubs and I decided to make the most of our free time and treat our family to a delicious lunch. We headed to Sin Kee restaurant, a renowned establishment in Little India, Brickfields, known for its delectable Hainanese dishes. Despite a brief hiccup in the service, our overall experience was delightful, with an array of mouthwatering dishes that left us satisfied and content.  Sin Kee has been around for at least 3 decades.

As we arrived at Sin Kee restaurant, the bustling crowd immediately caught our attention. It was Hari Raya Haji, a public holiday, and many people had flocked to the restaurant to savor the famous Hainanese cuisine.

However, upon entering the restaurant, we noticed that almost all the tables were occupied, and none of them had food served yet. Our stomachs grumbled with hunger as we eagerly awaited our turn. Unfortunately, the wait proved to be longer than expected, lasting more than half an hour. Patience wearing thin, we couldn't help but wish for a faster service.

Once our dishes finally arrived, the long wait became a distant memory as the enticing aromas wafted from the table. We had ordered a variety of Hainanese specialties, each with its own unique flavors and textures.

Hainanese Chicken Chop: The Hainanese Chicken Chop stole the show with its tender, succulent chicken smothered in a savory brown sauce. The accompanying fries and vegetables added a delightful crunch, making it a satisfying dish.

Hainanese Pork Chop: Next up was the Hainanese Pork Chop, made from minced pork. While it had a strong porky smell that didn't quite suit my taste, it was nonetheless a favorite among some diners who enjoy richer flavors.

Deep Fried Black Pomfret Fish: One dish that truly stood out was the Deep Fried Black Pomfret Fish. Its perfectly crispy exterior concealed delicate and flavorful flesh. Each bite was a treat, leaving us craving for more.

Stir-Fried Kailan with Garlic: The Stir-Fried Kailan with Garlic offered a refreshing and nutritious addition to the meal. The vibrant green vegetables were cooked to perfection, retaining their crunchiness and complementing the other dishes well.

Koo Lo Yoke: The Koo Lo Yoke, a sweet and sour fried pork dish, added a delightful balance of flavors to the table. The crispy pork coated in a tangy sauce was a hit among all of us.

Chinese Omelette (Foo Yoong Tarn): The Chinese Omelette, or Foo Yoong Tarn, was a crowd-pleaser. Packed with generous amounts of prawns, spam meat, waxed sausage, and vegetables, it offered a delightful medley of textures and flavors.

Tofu with Minced Pork: Lastly, the Tofu with Minced Pork provided a comforting addition to the meal. The silky tofu combined with the savory minced pork created a comforting and satisfying dish.

As we savored each dish, the reasonable bill came as a pleasant surprise. The total cost for the seven dishes amounted to RM149.50, which we found to be quite affordable considering the variety and quality of the food.

Despite the initial wait, our lunch experience at Sin Kee restaurant in Brickfields was a memorable one. The flavorsome Hainanese cuisine and the vibrant atmosphere of Little India made it a delightful outing.

While we were waiting for our food to arrive, we segued a few doors away to a vegetarian Indian restaurant to order takeaway Naan bread and Palak Paneer for dinner.  I didn't take note of the name of the restaurant but all of us loved their assortment of Naan bread (cheese Naan, garlic Naan and stuffed Naan).  Our next trip to Little India would be to this establishment to savor authentic Northern and Southern Indian food.

A Tale of Unexpected Culprits

Have you ever been caught in a whirlwind of mysterious disappearances, leading you to suspect those closest to you? Such was the case when my eyebrow pencil went missing for an entire week. In my quest for answers, suspicions arose, and poor Maria, my part-time helper, became the prime suspect. However, as the truth unfolded, it became clear that our mischievous feline friend, Haru, held the key to the puzzle.

The vanishing acts began a year ago when Cass lost her expensive ear pods. The search for these prized possessions proved fruitless, and the ear pods remained missing for many months.

The mystery deepened when my mother-in-law discovered that two of her favorite knives with teeth had vanished from the kitchen. The sudden disappearance left us perplexed, and our suspicions turned toward Maria, who had been present during these incidents.

The situation escalated further when a relative who lives below our unit and used to employ Maria for part-time service lost one of her two mobile phones and suspected foul play. The blame seemed to fall squarely on Maria's shoulders, yet the truth had a different story to tell.

After months of anguish over the missing mobile phone, our relative finally found it lying on the floor of her car recently. It was an unexpected turn of events that shed light on a hidden truth.

And Sherilyn recently found Cass’ missing ear pods behind the piano!

The revelation put an end to the clouds of suspicion surrounding Maria.

Just when we thought the mystery was solved, my long-lost eyebrow liner suddenly resurfaced from beneath my bed today. The relief was palpable, but our curiosity remained. How could all these items have gone missing without a trace, only to be discovered in such unexpected places?

In a surprising twist, our mischievous cat, Haru, emerged as the true culprit behind the disappearing act.  I suspect that Haru, with her playful nature, had apparently climbed onto the piano and played with the ear pods until they fell behind the piano.  I also believe that she had climbed up my dressing table to play with my eyebrow pencil, swiped it, and caused it to roll under my bed.

Our furry friend had unknowingly caused all the commotion and turmoil, leaving us feeling both relieved and slightly amused by her antics.

The revelation of Haru's mischief filled us with mixed emotions. We felt relieved for Maria who had been wrongly accused and suspected. And as for Haru, our playful cat, we can't help but love her even more for adding a touch of unexpected adventure to our lives.

This experience served as a valuable lesson, teaching us the importance of refraining from hasty judgments and cultivating trust in our relationships.

Mischievous kitty but love her to bits.

Friday, 16 June 2023 - Meeting with Education Counselor @ Taylor's University

Embarking on a new educational journey is always an exciting and critical decision, especially when it involves pursuing a professional course like architecture. Today, I accompanied Sherilyn to Taylor's University, where we met with an education counselor to gather insights about the architecture course offered there. This visit proved to be an eye-opening experience, shedding light on the long and challenging road that lies ahead for Sherilyn to fulfill her dream of becoming a registered architect.

Our meeting with the education counselor at Taylor's University was insightful and comprehensive. We were given detailed information about the architecture program, including the duration of each phase of study – the Foundation, Bachelor's, and Master's courses. It was evident that this course demands a considerable investment of time, effort, and money. The counselor also provided us with an overview of the costs involved, emphasizing the significance of planning for the financial aspects of higher education.

At Taylor's University today.

Following our visit to the university, I reached out to a friend of mine who is a registered architect to gain further perspective on the architectural profession. My friend candidly shared that an architecture course is widely regarded as one of the most demanding academic pursuits, second only to medicine. She highlighted the rigorous and meticulous nature of the course, involving numerous requirements and examinations before one can become a registered architect. This conversation reinforced the idea that Sherilyn's path would not be easy, but it also served to underline the immense value and satisfaction that comes with achieving this professional milestone.

Recognizing the importance of gathering insights from those already established in the field, I arranged for Sherilyn to meet my architect friend for a face-to-face discussion next week.  This meeting will allow her to gain valuable advice, firsthand experiences, and a realistic understanding of the challenges and rewards that lie ahead. I firmly believe that hearing from someone who has walked the path Sherilyn aspires to tread will greatly assist her in making an informed decision about her future.

Friday, 9 June 2023 ~ Random Updates

In the past couple of weeks, my world has been a whirlwind of responsibilities, health issues, and the absence of my part-time helper, Maria. It's been quite a ride, to say the least.

Maria, my part-time helper, recently went back to Indonesia for a two-week break. With her absence, the burden of managing all the housework fell on my shoulders. From cooking and cleaning to chauffeuring, it has been a constant juggling act. Balancing work, parenting, and household chores has tested my multitasking skills and pushed me to my limits.

On top of this, I was hit by a stubborn and irritating cough that has plagued me for the past seven nights. Sleepless nights, a ticklish throat, and a congested chest have become my constant companions. Despite trying three different types of cough syrup, none have provided relief. If this persists, I have decided to see a doctor on Monday.

The lack of or rather the absence of deep and uninterrupted sleep has taken its toll on my overall well-being. The persistent cough and lack of shuteye have left me with a nagging headache, constant fatigue, bouts of dizziness and aches in my ribs (from the constant coughing). I'm physically and mentally drained. This feels so much worse than getting Covid!  However, I remain hopeful that tomorrow will bring a better day and that I'll find the energy to tackle life's hurdles head-on.

The best piece of news I got this week is Sherilyn’s SPM results.  I didn’t set high expectations for Sherilyn to excel in her SPM. She had spent too much time dancing, baking, cooking, participating in endless competitions in and out of school, and on other stuff, thus didn’t put 100% effort into preparation for her exam. Thus, I didn’t expect much from her.  I thought to myself that as long as she passes the SPM and is eligible to get into college and uni, I’ll be happy.  But this girl surprised me with her results.  She did score several As, and even an A for Math, the subject that I thought was her weakest. And she got a B for Physics, the subject that she once failed in school.

All glory to God.

This Miss Ambitious has now decided to pursue A-Levels at MCKL and then a BA of Science in Architecture, followed by a Master's of Architecture.  I kept telling her to reconsider her decision as it's going to take at least 7 years of studies and several years of experience as an architect including fulfilling specific requirements and qualifications governed by Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) before she becomes a registered architect and gets a prefix, "Ar" before her name.  This will entail a lot of hard work, not to mention money to fund her tertiary education.  Our Miss Ambitious has remained steadfast in her decision and told me that she will continue working part-time to partially fund her uni fees. 😮

Sherilyn made a big batch of blueberry pie and tarts as blueberries are in season and on sale now.  She made so many that we've been savoring the luscious blueberry tarts and pie every day for the past week.

Yummiest blueberry tart ever with the perfect pie crust and a generous filling of fresh blueberries and blueberry compote. She made the compote herself and it's pretty easy and fast to prep it.

Blueberry tarts for her colleagues in Front Room Cafe.

The eldest SIL from England came to visit and stayed with us for 5 days.  She commissioned Sherilyn to bake a blueberry tart for her to bring to a friends' meetup.

With a part-time job from Monday through Saturday, Sherilyn didn't have much time to bake the tart. She spaced out the baking steps over several days and managed to complete the tart in the morning on the day of my SIL's meetup with her friends, just before leaving for work.

Friday, 2 June 2023

Fridays are usually exciting and filled with plans for the weekend, but sometimes life throws unexpected curveballs. Since yesterday I have been feeling under the weather, battling a cough, slight nasal congestion, and a pounding headache. Today it got worse and I started to have a scratchy throat. With the worry of COVID looming, I decided to take precautions and took a self-test, which thankfully turned out negative. Though feeling unwell, I didn't want to spoil the plans for Cass to attend her figure skating class at Pavillion Bukit Jalil.  Fortunately, Alycia came home from uni early and told me that she could accompany Cass to Pavillion.  Later, Sherilyn texted me to tell me that her dance class was canceled and she could also bring Cass to Pavillion.  Now Cass has two chaperones to bring her to Pavillion by Grab while I stayed home to rest.

To reward Alycia and Sherilyn, I treated them to dinner of sushi, and to a movie. While Cass had a delightful time at the skating rink, Alycia and Sherilyn enjoyed the new Spiderman animated movie at the cinema, which they said was good.  Everyone had an enjoyable day despite the hiccup in my health.

After fetching Cass back from school, I brought her to the sundae truck and this time luck was on her side. It was opened!

Saturday Night Dinner At Restaurant Bak Kut Teh Fatty Chun

There's something special about exploring new restaurants and indulging in a delightful dining experience. Last Saturday night our family visited Bak Kut Teh Fatty Chun restaurant, driven by hubby’s previous exceptional dining experience there.

As we entered Fatty Chun, we were greeted by friendly and helpful staff, and a cozy ambiance that immediately put us at ease, even though the restaurant wasn’t air-conditioned. The restaurant boasted an extensive menu, featuring a variety of tai chow specialties. After some careful consideration, we settled on seven dishes that sounded enticing and promised to be a feast for our taste buds.

1. Steamed Village Chicken with Ginger Sauce: Our meal commenced with a classic and timeless dish – steamed village chicken served with ginger sauce. The tender, succulent chicken, paired with the aromatic ginger sauce, was a match made in culinary heaven. The chicken was cooked to perfection, retaining its juiciness and natural flavors.

2. Flavorful Fried Fish Head: Next on our culinary journey was the fried fish head, and we were pleasantly surprised by its delightful taste. The dish was expertly prepared, with the fish head cooked to perfection. Every bite was a medley of flavors, and what impressed us most was the absence of any overpowering fishy smell. It was a true testament to the chef's skill and the restaurant's commitment to quality.

3. Stir-Fried Lettuce: To balance out the richness of our meal, we opted for the refreshing stir-fried lettuce. The greens were lightly stir-fried to retain their crunchiness, and the subtle seasoning added a delightful flavor. This dish served as a refreshing palate cleanser, complementing the other dishes perfectly.

4. Clay Pot Ba Kut Teh: The aroma of the herbal broth filled the air as the dish arrived at our table. The pork ribs were tender and succulent, but unfortunately, the soup itself fell a bit short. We found it to be slightly bland and diluted, lacking the robust flavors we were expecting.

5. Scrumptious Yam Basket: The yam basket was a delightful surprise and quickly became one of our favorite dishes of the evening. The golden, crispy yam shell encased a medley of stir-fried vegetables and tender chicken meat, creating a harmonious combination of textures and flavors. This dish was both visually appealing and satisfying to the palate.

6. Irresistible Fried Noodles with Egg Sauce: The crispy deep-fried noodles with egg sauce added a touch of comfort to our dinner.  Tossed in a luscious egg sauce with a variety of ingredients, this dish was a hit with everyone at the table.

7. Delectable Deep-Fried Mantis Prawns: Last but not least, we savored the deep-fried mantis prawns. These succulent prawns were coated in a light, crispy batter, resulting in a tantalizing combination of flavors and textures. The prawns were a true indulgence, and we relished each bite.

Our Saturday night dinner at Fatty Chun Ba Kut Teh restaurant was a satisfying experience. From the warm welcome to the delightful array of dishes, everything exceeded our expectations. Each plate was crafted with care and precision, showcasing the culinary expertise of the restaurant's talented chefs.

We left the restaurant with satisfied taste buds and full stomachs.
