Feeding Toddlers Medicine

Alycia and Sherilyn have never been easy feeders when it comes to medicine.
Thankfully, they rarely fell sick when they were younger, maybe once or twice a year.

When they were younger, there must be at least 3 people around in order to get them to swallow their medicine and those sick days were full of drama and emotions, and the air in the house was filled with wafts of vomit.

As I was still working then, I had 2 maids at home to help with the chores and to help my mil with the gals. One maid would be holding back Alycia's struggling hands, the other maid would be holding back her forcefully kicking legs whilst my mil would force open Alycia's mouth and squirt the syringe of syrup medicine into her mouth, only to be thrown up within seconds. If my youngest sil or I were around, we would be the entertainers, acting out anything we could think of under the sun from singing to acting silly to using a toy to distract, you name it. The house was like a battle ground each time the gals fell sick.

Eversince Alycia attended pre-school early this year and fell sick so frequently (and then spreading the illness to Sherilyn), both gals have kinda got immuned to the taste of medicines or maybe I finally found them a paed who prescribes them with sweet nice smelling and tasty medicine.

As for me, I am now a pro-medicine-feeder to toddlers and can sup sup sui feed both the gals their medicine all by myself even with my eyes closed and don't even need to use a syringe anymore.... but on one condition set by the gals... there must be SWEET TREATS for them to go with their medicine. No problem lah so long as they willingly swallow their medicine.

So each time the gals are prescribed with medicine, DH and I would stock up the house with cakes, organic buns and biscuits. Alycia actually loves falling sick coz that's the only time mummy is so lenient and generous with sweet stuff with her. Sometimes she even pretends to be sick for she thinks she can fool us into bringing her to the doctor but she doesn't know that her mummy is fool-proof.

All set ready to feed the gals medicine.... plain chiffon cake, organic bread, their medicine and measuring cup. Oh, forgot to put the cup of water in.

initially Jeriel was like that when he was a baby. We used syringe. Now, no problem..he knows that taking medicine is make him feel better. Even when he is not sick, he will act sick like coughing and tell us he need medicine...

used to have the same problem with my dd but i prefer to use the soft way. i will explain to my dd that she must take the medicine in order to recover from her illness, to get more energy and start playing with daddy and mommy again. i also find using books to illustrate this helps a lot. Barney has a good selection of books like "Going to the doctor", "Going to the dentist", which can be used to explain to young children.

why not feeding them with something other than medicine fr minor cases like flu/cold/cough/mild fever especially when you having tough time to feed them medicine. And I believe you all are aware that these sicknesses(esp viral infection) got no medicine to cure it, in actual fact it is just to make them feel more comfortable but at the same time it can weaken their immune system.

For me, I will only feed my kids with rich nutrition wholesome food/concentrated drinks when they are down with those sickness, just let their immune system do the job, and not to worry too much, they will be alright after 1,3,5 days or maybe a week or so.

just my 2c.

Jeff.. what rich nutritious wholesome stuff do u feed ur kids with?
Sometimes I let them heal by themselves but if after a few days, still no improvement, i'll bring them to the dr.

I used to dread feeding my girl her medicine too. Now, it is so easy to feed her :)

Basically all vege/fruits are rich in nutrition ie vitamins, minerals, fiber etc that can nourish our body immune system(good fr preventive healthcare) and certain plant like cactus/cactus fruit, rose, mushrooms, ganoderma, luffa, alfalfa, ginseng berry etc can boost up our immune system (good fr prevention, healing and curing sickness).

These are the things I'm giving to my kids in daily basis and in the form of 'powder' which is wholesomely processed by 'freeze drying technique', and also in the form of concentrated drinks (ie cactus juice) which process thru ultra-micro filtration technique. These technique allowed the products to be bacteria-free and no preservative/addictive added.

It's fr our convenient(15 types of plant food in a single sachet) and it's very natural and safe fr consumption as it is just food not drug.

cheers :)

All mommies... i guess almost all kids r the same... hard to feed at first but things get better later.

Jeff.. r u feeding ur kids E.Excel cactus juice?

Jeff See said...

yup, and cactus juice/millennium is just one of it and feed them mostly during sickness as it's expensive :) daily basis i gv them nutrifresh (15 types of vege/fruits) for their daily basic nutrition needs and ACT(capsule)to boost up immune system as it can nourish their body's immune organ~thymus(train up our immune cell to fight against any intruder).

I've friends feeding their school-going toddlers E.Excel & Millenium and they told me the results are not that good, coz their kids still fell sick frequently.
I am now feeding a new immune system supporting product to my gals. DH & I are also taking and it's very expensive. If it's proven good, I shall blog about it later.

there are many factors that can cause one to fall sick and growing up kids are more easily to fall sick esp those caused by viral infection ie flu as their body immune system is still building up and need time to produce the 'right' antibodies to kill those viruses and virus keep mutating, so immune system need to produce different antibodies all the time. Therefore it's wrong to say after consuming millennium your kids wont fall sick anymore and beside that we need varieties of nutrition to nourish our body whole immune system.

For my kids, they still get flu/cold/cough .. once in a while, but they will recover very fast normally less than 3 days and normally it wont effect their appetite, just wasted more tissues paper.
